If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Joe and Anthony Russo are reportedly in early talks with Marvel to direct the next two Avengers sequels. The Russo brothers previously directed the hit movies Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame for the MCU.

The Russo Brothers Are Back

iron man

If Marvel wants its upcoming Avengers sequels to crush it at the box office, then the Russo Brothers are a pretty safe choice. Both of their Captain America films did great at the box office and were some of the most positively reviewed films in the MCU, but their Avengers films took that to the next level, with Infinity War grossing over $2 billion worldwide and Endgame grossing over $2.7 billion. On top of that, many fans consider the one-two punch of Infinity War and Endgame to be the peak of the MCU as far as hype goes.

The MCU Has Faltered Since Endgame

So, Marvel may be trying to drum up some hype for the upcoming Avengers sequels by bringing back two of their most reliable directors. However, it’s worth noting that the MCU was in pretty good shape when the Russo Brothers brought the Avengers together last time, and it’s been a little wayward ever since Endgame. While the quality of the post-Endgame MCU has varied, it’s safe to say that there isn’t as strong of a storyline leading up to the next Avengers movie as there was when Infinity War hit screens.

Kang The Not Appearing In This Movie

Adding to Marvel’s pains for the upcoming Avengers sequels is the fact that they dropped the actor playing their next big bad Avengers villain, Kang the Conqueror. After Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault and harassment, Marvel dropped him and, presumably, the Kang storyline with him. If the Russo Brothers sign on, they don’t currently have a big bad like Thanos that has been built up as a threat in previous projects.

Of course, Marvel will undoubtedly change that and introduce the replacement villain (or replacement actor if the Kang storyline does continue) before the Avengers sequels. Originally, the title of the fifth Avengers movie was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but it reportedly will be getting a new name. So, the Russo Brothers should have some creative wiggle room if they do sign on.

DOOM ALWAYS WINS

Marvel seems to be keeping the sixth Avengers sequel, titled Secret Wars, on the docket, and the Russo Brothers have previously expressed interest in bringing this storyline from the comics to life. The Secret Wars comic series was initially introduced in the 1980s and brought back in 2015 with a revival series, so there’s plenty of story to draw from.

In the 2015 revival, Doctor Doom played a major role, so it’s possible that he could end up being the next big villain, especially with the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.

Disney Is Inevitable

Since leaving Marvel, the Russo Brothers have stayed busy with producing and directing gigs, but coming back for the Avengers sequels would certainly be a big homecoming for them. While the brothers may have initially said they were done with Marvel after Endgame, it appears Disney can always bring you back. We’ll have to wait and see if they decide to sign on but stay tuned, and we’ll keep you updated.
