Marvel Finds Replacements For Russo Brothers On Avengers Sequels?

By Douglas Helm | Published

Marvel’s previous two Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame, were arguably the peak of the MCU while also being two of the biggest movies of all time (at least from a box office perspective). The films were helmed by the Russo brothers, who have since moved on from the world of superhero blockbusters. This means whoever directs the upcoming Secret Wars film has lofty expectations to meet, but Loki Season 2 directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead seem ready for the challenge.

The Team Behind Loki Wants To Direct The Next Avengers Film

Benson and Moorehead recently had an interview with Comicbook.com, where both directors expressed they were open to the possibility of taking on Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars movie if they were called up for it. Moorehead and Benson talked about how they were staying busy juggling their multiple writing, directing, and editing roles, but Moorehead said, “I mean there’s absolutely no telling what our future holds.” Fans on social media have suggested Benson and Moorehead as potential directors to take on Secret Wars as well, so maybe MCU head honcho Kevin Feige will take that into account.

Benson And Moorehead Will Also Direct The New Daredevil Series

Marvel previously installed the Russo Brothers as their go-to directors for many major projects, starting with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and culminating with Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Benson and Moorehead most recently took on Loki Season 2, but they also directed the Moon Knight series and will be taking the reins on the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. They certainly have been in the MCU machine for a while now, so having them take on Secret Wars could be a good decision for Marvel.

The Multiverse Saga

This is especially the case, considering Loki was the series that introduced us to Marvel’s multiverse in the first place. The current saga of the MCU is known as the Multiverse Saga, and it will be culminating with the major Avengers: Secret Wars crossover. It would make sense that someone involved with the series that kicked off the multiverse would also be involved in the film that brings everything to a fitting conclusion.

The Kang Dynasty Has Already Found Its Director

With that being said, Marvel does already have a director in place for its upcoming Avengers film, The Kang Dynasty, which will precede Secret Wars. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the well-received Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, will be helming that film. Similar to how the Russo Brothers took on both Infinity War and Endgame, it would make sense to have Destin Daniel Cretton take on both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars for continuity’s sake.

Secret Wars Is Set To Release In 2027

In any case, we’re just going to have to wait and see who is going to be involved in Secret Wars until Marvel is ready to let us know. The upcoming Avengers films are amongst the most anticipated films in the MCU’s future slate of projects, so Marvel is likely going to keep things under wraps as long as possible. In the meantime, you can check out Benson and Moorhead’s work on Loki Season 2, which is now streaming in its entirety on Disney+.
