Marvel Is Now Crowdsourcing Ideas
Jeff Loveness wrote the new Ant-Man movie and asked people on Twitter to crowdsource how to write a blockbuster.
Just a week after being hired to pen the script for Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Jeff Loveness asked his Twitter followers to share their ideas for the blockbuster. While the request was obviously in jest, the tweet received all kinds of responses ranging from serious to outlandish. Award-winning comic writer/artist Chip Zdarsky also replied with the beginnings of a faux screenplay involving Marvel’s Wolverine and the Fantastic Four’s Reed Richards.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton who previously worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. But it’s unclear which superheroes will make up the team’s roster for a story that helps close out Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All that’s known for now is that Kevin Feige has a timeline that sees the movie arrive on May 2, 2025. Avengers: Secret Wars will follow on November 7, 2025.
Jonathan Majors has been cast as Kang the Conqueror and was introduced in Loki. The character will be re-introduced in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which hits theaters on February 17, 2023, launching Marvel’s Phase Five. In the Disney+ series, the actor played the villain with the moniker “He Who Remains.” But at San Diego Comic-Con, the 33-year-old said there are “multiple Kangs.” And the one from Ant-Man is different from the series.
Kang’s role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will probably lead to more appearances across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like Thanos’ mini-appearances set up his storyline for Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The studio hasn’t confirmed its exact long-term plans for the character. But, given the importance of the supervillain in comic book lore, something very cool is probably in the works.
Marvel will wrap Phase Four with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November. As such, the studio has been slowly hiring creative talent for its next batch of movies. Kevin Feige, the brains behind the entire operation, recently gushed about Jonathan Majors and Kang in an interview with ComicBook shortly after Comic Con. “It’s amazing,” the Marvel boss said of his new star. “And there are nobody’s shoulders I’d rather be putting the Multiverse Saga on than his.”
Feige added that Majors is a very impressive actor and can portray every incarnation of Kang in the multiverse. He also explained that Kang is a very different type of villain than Thanos which will add something special to the entire saga. Since he didn’t elaborate on the Marvel villain’s origin story, here’s a little background for anyone unfamiliar with the source material.
In the Marvel comics, Kang the Conqueror/ Nathaniel Richards is one of the Avengers’ most persistent and powerful foes. Created by writer Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in 1964’s The Avengers #8. A 31st-century scholar and descendant of Reed Richards’ father, Nathaniel becomes fascinated with history and discovers time travel technology created by Victor von Doom. After an altercation with the Fantastic Four somewhere in time, travels to the 20th century where he meets Doctor Doom.
When Marvel’s Mightiest Heroes Avengers manage to force him from the timeline, Nathaniel tries to return to the 31st century. But he ends up lost on a war-torn Earth that uses advanced weapons they no longer understand. After conquering the planet and expanding his dominion throughout the galaxy, Kang the Conqueror decides to take over an earlier version of Earth.
