7 Marvel Characters Who Need To Be Killed Off
Marvel could kill off these characters, and the MCU would be better off for it.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been in motion for 15 years. Over that time, several characters have come and gone, but many more have yet to meet a decisive fate. Marvel is often reluctant to commit to killing characters, but for some, death is the perfect end to a powerful arc. Here are seven Marvel characters who need to be killed off.
Nick Fury
Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has been in the MCU since the beginning. He made his first appearance in the post-credit scene of 2008’s Iron Man to propose to Tony Stark the Avengers Initiative. Fury’s words changed the course of movie history in a matter of seconds.
Fury is one of the more complex characters Marvel has to offer. He is on the side of good, but his tactics often prove questionable. Nick Fury will headline this summer’s Secret Invasion series and appear later in The Marvels. Those stories may offer just the right amount of time for Fury, the assembler of heroes, to make the ultimate sacrifice and cement his place as an undeniable hero himself.
Hank Pym
Watching Michael Douglas work the campy material in the Ant-Man films is always a joy, but his time in the Marvel story may be expiring. The Ant-Man trilogy, especially Quantumania, suffers from a lack of lasting consequences.
Because no one is ever truly hurt, killed, or otherwise irreparably affected, the characters in the Ant-Man franchise have grown stale. The death of Hank Pym would send shockwaves through the lives of Scott, Cassie, Hope, and Janet, forcing the family to overcome great obstacles without the help of their resident genius.
Hank Pym in the MCU is excellent, and that is exactly why killing him off would add emotional depth to a franchise in search of just that.
Miss Minutes
Marvel proved artificial intelligence can die when the Avengers defeated Ultron, and again when Thanos destroyed Vision. Can Loki and Mobius figure out how to destroy Miss Minutes?
The lovable cartoon mascot of the Time Variance Authority is anything but friendly. The propaganda machine and AI puppet of He Who Remains is part of the problem at the TVA. As Loki and his team of renegades take on the TVA in Season 2 of Loki, they may not be able to succeed without killing Miss Minutes.
Plus, Loki killing a cute cartoon character is just good old-fashioned family fun.
The Winter Soldier
Bucky Barnes has had a hard go in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He has gone from hero to brainwashed villain to lost shell to hero again. As the uncomfortable therapy sessions in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed, those transitions have not come easy for the tortured science experiment.
It is not Bucky who should be killed off. It is his title as the Winter Soldier that needs to die.
The Winter Soldier is a killer moniker, but it is not who Bucky is anymore. The man has been through enough, and it is time for him to shed the name the world gave him when he was a ruthless assassin and embrace a name suited for a hero.
Baron Mordo
Marvel usually runs a tight narrative ship, but the expansive tale is not without its loose ends. One of those lingering pests is Baron Mordo. Introduced as an ally to Dr. Strange, Mordo lost his faith in sorcery and set out on a mission to steal sorcerers’ power.
But fans have not seen Mordo (at least not that variant) since the post-credit scene of Dr. Strange. In the comics, Mordo is one of Strange’s greatest enemies. A confrontation between the two should definitely be on Marvel Studios’ priority list.
When these titans clash, there are only a few ways it could end. The death of Mordo would spell triumph for Dr. Strange and tie up a loose end that has been lingering in the MCU.
Helmut Zemo
Zemo has done more damage to the Avengers than almost anyone, and he did it without superpowers. This insidious terrorist is a villainous mastermind, but he has shown potential for good.
Zemo could complete one of the most interesting Marvel character arcs by sacrificing himself for a righteous cause. He could also give his life for something more sinister.
Either way, death could be a fitting end to Zemo’s story. How he dies could color all of his past actions, making him a character who would be very interesting to kill off.
Kang the Conqueror
Marvel has some big decisions to make behind the scenes regarding actor Jonathan Majors and his role as Kang the Conqueror. Whether or not Majors stays in the role, there is only one way to kill Kang – kill him in every universe.
As Quantumania proved, taking on even one version of Kang is a nearly impossible task. Stopping infinite versions of him spread across the multiverse is a whole different ballgame.
Marvel has to kill Kang eventually; someone so dangerous cannot remain in the multiverse. How Kang will be killed off is a mystery, but when it happens, it is sure to be an epic event.
