When Marky Mark decided to take his talents from the recording studio to the movie screen, no one could have predicted the success he would find. His film career has been defined by a number of great movies and even a few that can be considered underrated. One of those Mark Wahlberg films is now finding new life as it sits at #2 on the popular Hulu streaming service.
Four Brothers stars Marky Mark aka Mark Wahlberg as Bobby, the criminal older brother to Angel (Tyrese Gibson), Jeremiah (André Benjamin), and Jack (Garrett Hedlund). The brothers come back together when their adoptive mother is murdered in what appears to be a robbery-gone-wrong. The impressive cast of Four Brothers also includes Terrance Howard, Josh Charles, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Together for the first time in a while, the brothers’ band to get to the bottom of their mothers’ death. Something about it doesn’t sit right with them. A little digging allows the brothers to discover that the robbery was a cover for a hit that was put out on her. The brothers find the two gunmen hired to kill her but they refuse to give up any information. Bobby and Angel then execute them.
As Bobby digs even deeper, he comes to realize that his brother Jeremiah’s business was failing and that their mother’s death would benefit Jeremiah from her life insurance. When the brothers confront Jeremiah, he gives them a different version of the story.
Jeremiah informs his brothers that his construction company is failing because he wouldn’t get in bed with the local gang lord Victor Sweet (Ejiofor). For any of his projects to succeed and profit, Jeremiah would have to continue paying off the right people, which he refused to do. He tried to make up for it but it was too late.
Jeremiah’s explanation around the life insurance was that the money was for his daughters because he was the one who paid all of the brother’s mother’s bills while they were all away.
The boys are at home during this confrontation when Sweet’s goons attack them. One of the brothers doesn’t survive the attack.
Soon, more revelations are presented when Green (Howard) approaches the remaining brothers telling them that their mother had filed a police report accusing Sweet of being involved in Jeremiah’s business affairs, but that Green’s partner, Detective Fowler (Charles), took that information to Sweet.
Green tells the boys he will handle Fowler and after that, they can work together to take down Sweet. Green never makes it to deal with Sweet. The brothers now must find a way to take down both Fowler and Sweet, while proving their own innocence.
Four Brothers is a great, if underrated, Mark Wahlberg crime thriller. John Singleton, whose previous work includes Rosewood, Shaft, Baby Boy, and 2 Fast 2 Furious, directed the film from a script written by scribes David Elliot and Paul Lovett.
The film wasn’t a critical hit for Mark Wahlberg though audiences flocked to see the film. Singleton was given a budget of $30 million and was rewarded with a $92 million take at the box office.
Although Mark Wahlberg first came to fame as Marky Mark, he hit it big with his second feature film Boogie Nights, playing porn star Dirk Diggler. From there, his stock went up.
Mark Wahlberg then went on to films like The Big Hit, Three Kings, The Yards, The Perfect Storm (his second go-around with George Clooney after Three Kings), and the remake of Planet of the Apes. Wahlberg was becoming a box office draw and leading man.
After a number of successful films that include The Departed, We Own the Night, and The Happening, Mark Wahlberg decided to change it up and bit and try his hand at comedy. He starred in Date Night with Steve Carell and Tina Fey then was in the first of three movies with comedian Will Ferrell, The Other Guys. He would eventually star in Daddy’s Home and Daddy’s Home 2 with Ferrell as well.
Mark Wahlberg would also find time in the comedies Ted and Ted 2, while also jumping into the Transformers franchise with Transformers: Age of Extinction and Transformers: The Last Knight.
Mark Wahlberg continues to crank out popular movies as his latest comes from Paramount+ titled Infinite. Wahlberg will next be seen in the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the popular video game, Uncharted, opposite Spider-Man’s Tom Holland. Also on deck for Mark Wahlberg is Arthur the King and the film reboot of the popular TV series The Six Million Dollar Man, titled The Six Billion Dollar Man (inflation, go figure).
For now, you can catch the entertaining Mark Wahlberg film, Four Brothers, on Hulu.
