Mark Ruffalo Never Getting Solo Hulk Movie Thanks To Kevin Feige
Mark Ruffalo has been playing the Hulk in the MCU since 2012’s The Avengers. While the green giant has popped up in numerous ensemble movies since then, he still doesn’t have his own solo movie. According to Ruffalo, MCU head honcho Kevin Feige ruled out that possibility a while ago.
The Conversation
Mark Ruffalo spoke during a panel at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival about conversations he’s had with Kevin Feige about a solo Hulk movie. According to Ruffalo, he told Feige, “I’d like to take him from this raging maniac to kind of this integrated character,” when asked what he would want from a solo movie. To which Feige told him, “Okay, we’ll do that over the course of four movies,” adding, “We’ll never give you a standalone Hulk, let’s just get that – I don’t mean to burst your bubble… but that’s not happening.”
The Hulk’s MCU Journey
Of course, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk has had quite the journey Avengers, heading to space after Avengers: Age of Ultron and becoming a beloved gladiator on the planet Sakaar. He would face off against Thanos at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War, only to face defeat.
In Avengers: Endgame, we saw Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner and Hulk personalities reconcile to become Professor Hulk. The last time we saw the character was as a mentor to She-Hulk in her Disney+ series, where he revealed he had a son named Skaar. It seems like Ruffalo definitely got his wish for him to become a more integrated character in the MCU, but is that solo film a future possibility?
The Answer Is Still No
Apparently not, as Mark Ruffalo was asked if Kevin Feige’s stance on a solo movie was still in effect, to which Ruffalo replied, “As far as I know.” However, Ruffalo did add the caveat, “I could talk more about it but I’ve been told not to.” So, clearly, the MCU won’t be done with the Hulk anytime soon.
Brave New Confusion
The question is, when will we see Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk pop up next? In the same panel, Ruffalo accidentally gave fans the impression that the character would be showing up in next year’s Captain America: Brave New World. When asked if he would appear in the film, Ruffalo said, “Yeah,” and “It’s going to be great!”
However, multiple sources clarified that Mark Ruffalo misspoke and that he thought he was agreeing that Brave New World is one of Marvel’s next films, not if he was going to be a part of it. However, that didn’t stop fans from jumping on the statement. Many are expecting that Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross would finally be transforming into his Red Hulk alter-ego from the comics, so an appearance from Ruffalo would make sense.
Still With Marvel?
In any case, we can at least take comfort in the fact that Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk won’t be going anywhere anytime soon and that we can expect to see him again in a future MCU project. At the very least, we can probably expect to see him in the upcoming Avengers films. In the meantime, fans can look forward to the next big MCU project, Deadpool & Wolverine, which hits theaters on July 26.
