Margot Robbie The Sims Movie Is Happening At Amazon MGM
It looks like Margot Robbie’s film adaptation of The Sims has landed at Amazon MGM Studios. Reports of the project were revealed earlier this year with Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment producing and Kate Herron directing and co-writing the screenplay with Briony Redman. This is the first report of a studio being attached, and it seems like Amazon is fully ready to commit to the ongoing wave of video game adaptations.
The Sims Movie Battle
According to the original report, both Amazon MGM and Netflix were battling for the rights for Margot Robbie’s The Sims film, but Netflix would have made it a streaming release.
The report indicated that Netflix even offered more for the project, but Robbie’s company wanted a theatrical release, which Amazon MGM was apparently willing to commit to.
Out of all the companies to trust with a theatrical release, Robbie’s LuckyChap seems like a safe bet after Barbie easily cleared a whopping $1.4 billion at the box office last summer.
Bringing That Barbie Magic?
Amazon also has had huge recent success with video game adaptations thanks to the Fallout TV series.
Amazon claimed the show amassed over 65 million viewers within the first two weeks of its availability, and it has been receiving universal acclaim from new viewers and fans of the Fallout video game franchise alike.
If Margot Robbie and Amazon can bring some of that Barbie and Fallout magic to an adaptation of The Sims, this movie could be a big blockbuster success.
The Sims Franchise
The Sims franchise first released on PC in 2000 and was developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts.
While the mainline game lacks anything resembling a plotline, it allows players to create virtual people, called Sims, and simulate their lives while meeting their needs and reaching certain goals.
The franchise has since become a massive video game phenomenon with multiple sequels, spin-offs, and expansions.
A Sims Movie Plot?
Margot Robbie’s upcoming The Sims movie certainly has a big enough built-in fanbase. The series is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time, with lifetime sales of over $5 billion as of 2019 and units sold somewhere in the range of 200 million units worldwide.
While it’s unclear what the movie might be about, it’s one of the more interesting upcoming video game adaptations due to the questions surrounding it. But, people also wondered if a Barbie film could be successful, and a billion dollars and numerous Academy Award nominations later proved the answer is yes.
Margot Robbie Is The Queen Of The Big Screen
Margot Robbie is quickly becoming the queen of bringing our childhoods to the big screen, as it was also announced earlier this year that Robbie’s LuckyChap is producing a Monopoly film with Lionsgate.
If Robbie’s The Sims and Monopoly adaptations can be as successful as Barbie, she might just become the go-to producer for toy and video game movies. In the meantime, it’ll be interesting to see who is cast in these upcoming movies and what the plots will be about.
