Whether you enjoyed Birds of Prey or not, you probably love Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The way she plays this iconic DC character is something that has drawn audiences in again and again. While there is a lot to love in the trailer for The Suicide Squad, Harley Quinn manages to stand out time and again. It’s part of that magic that likely got the redband trailer over 150 million views worldwide in its first week. Writer and director James Gunn, the same mind that brought us Guardians of the Galaxy shared the record-breaking number for an R-rated trailer with his Twitter followers.
Previously, the redband trailer record was held by Mortal Kombat with 116 million views in its first week. While The Suicide Squad isn’t coming out for a while yet, audiences are definitely excited. And who wouldn’t be? That trailer definitely promises an R-rated comedy. The parting line from Margot Robbie is unexpected and hilarious. The jokes about coughing were especially timely. There aren’t a lot of trailers worth watching more than once, but The Suicide Squad trailer definitely was, which probably helped pump up those numbers. Whether you have already seen the trailer or not, you’ll want to spend the next three minutes rewatching Margot Robbie and the rest of the crew in the trailer below.
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is joined by John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, who is giving the squad orders. While Robbie is of course hilarious, John Cena is a new standout in the trailer. It’s no surprise upon seeing the three minutes of video that HBO Max signed Cena on for his own spinoff series already. While trailers can of course be deceiving, this one is a fun three minutes. It sets high expectations for a funny and off-the-wall movie for DC. They brought back Margot Robbie as a fan favorite and brought in some great stars and wacky characters. King Shark promises to be a lot of fun.
Previously, Margot Robbie played Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad. Recently, following the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, fans have been asking for the #AyerCut for that movie. Robbie was asked about this, and said that she would personally love to see the five-hour cut of any movie she’s in. As an aside, she mentioned that there is a 20-hour cut of the Quentin Tarantino movie Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood, where she played Sharon Tate.
While her response to the #AyerCut was diplomatic, it doesn’t offer much in way of argument to ever see that happen. Suicide Squad earned $746.8 million at the worldwide box office. Meanwhile, it didn’t do well with fans. On Rotten Tomatoes, Suicide Squad has a 26% Tomatometer score with critics and 59% with audiences. With James Gunn at the wheel, and a mostly new cast (except for fan-favorite Margot Robbie) hopes are high that The Suicide Squad will be better received.
Currently, The Suicide Squad is set for release August 6, 2021. You’ll be able to see the movie in theaters or streaming on HBO Max for 31 days after release.
