Margot Robbie Returning To Her Best Franchise
This is a shocker!

We may have all gotten to know her as American characters like DC’s Harley Quinn, her portrayal of the disgraced figure skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s main squeeze in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street, but Margot Robbie was born and raised in Australia. Long before she was breaking up with the Joker or getting ready to play Barbie, Robbie had a three year stint on the popular Australian soap opera Neighbours. Over the weekend came the news that Robbie was returning to her role on the show for the long-running soap’s series finale.
As reported by THR, Neighbours made the announcement over the weekend on social media that Margot Robbie would be one of a number of the soap’s former cast members who would return for the series finale. Other returning alum include Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential), Kylie Minogue (Moulin Rouge!), and Natalie Imbruglia (Johnny English). You can see the show’s tweet about the appearance below.
Before you turn your nose up at Margot Robbie or any of the other alum for appearing on a soap opera, you should know that as a Neighbours alum, Robbie is in good company. Stars who have appeared on the show include Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Luke Hemsworth (Westworld), Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), and yes — the most famous Hemsworth of them all — Chris Hemsworth (Thor: Love and Thunder). In fact even Maximus himself, Russell Crowe of Gladiator fame, appeared on the show for four episodes in 1987.
First hitting Australian airwaves in 1985, Neighbours is set in the fictional town of Erinsborough and it’s the longest running TV drama in the history of the country. Margot Robbie was initially cast as a recurring character, but was soon promoted to show regular. She played the teenager Donna starting in 2008 and stuck with the show until 2011. Two years later came her career-making role in The Wolf of Wall Street.
The Margot Robbie role that everyone’s talking about these days, however, is very much an American one. The Birds of Prey star will play the eponymous iconic doll in next year’s Barbie. Ryan Gosling will appear opposite Robbie as Ken, and judging by some shots that recently emerged from the set, both will be wearing enough neon to blind any orbiting astronauts. You can see those photos below.
The payday Margot Robbie is seeing for Barbie recently surfaced, with both her and her co-star Gosling each making $12.5 million for the movie. It makes Robbie one of the highest paid actresses on Hollywood, which makes sense. The actress’ work puts butts in theater seats, particularly as evidenced by her turns as Harley Quinn. Even though it was torn to shred by critics, even 2016’s Suicide Squad — which debuted Robbie’s portrayal of the character — made boatloads of money.
We’re not sure when we can next expect to see Margot Robbie play the Joker’s ex-girlfriend. Gotham City Sirens has been put on hold. As for The Suicide Squad 2, James Gunn has said he plans to spend the near future working on his various TV projects. So unless a Harley Quinn series is one of those projects, it may be some time before we see Robbie play Quinn again.
