According to a report by Digital Spy via MTV News, Margot Robbie has confirmed that she’s very happy for Lady Gaga to take on the Harley Quinn character that she has played in three films to date. Often praised for her take on the character, Robbie stated in her interview with MTV News that she views Harley Quinn like many people feel about Macbeth or Batman, where several actors can take a stab at the character and make it their own fresh interpretation.
She goes on to say, “It’s such an honour to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing, and I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”
The 2019 film Joker showcased the talents of its lead star, Joaquin Phoenix, as it strived to give the enemy of Batman an origin story, despite none actually ever existing for the DC Comics supervillain in the original comic book series. The film was so successful that it has spawned a sequel entitled Joker: Folie à Deux, currently in production with Phoenix reprising his Academy Award-winning role alongside multi-hyphenate star Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
Australian actor Margot Robbie has played the character of Harley Quinn in several iterations in the DC Extended Universe, and she revealed her delight in Lady Gaga taking over the infamous role, which might not have been something people saw coming.
As Margot Robbie passes the torch onto Lady Gaga to play Harley Quinn, she is currently promoting two high-profile films called Amsterdam and Babylon. Amsterdam stars Robbie, Christian Bale, and John David Washington as a 1930s trio who stumbles upon a plot by a secret cabal hellbent on spreading fascism in America. In Babylon, the actor is featured alongside her Once Upon a Time in Hollywood costar Brad Pitt as the two engage in debauchery in 1920s Hollywood for director Damien Chazelle.
Joker: Folie à Deux director Todd Phillips chose not to use Margot Robbie for the sequel to his hit film Joker, instead replacing the part of Harley Quinn with a performance by Lady Gaga. The movie is intended to be a musical event for Harley Quinn and the Joker, showcasing the two demented lovers in a way that audiences have not seen before.
Joker: Folie à Deux is a follow-up for Lady Gaga after stunning performances in A Star is Born opposite Bradley Cooper and House of Gucci, the former she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and ended up winning the statue for the film’s original song, “Shallow.”
Prior to Margot Robbie and Lady Gaga swapping duties on playing Harley Quinn, Robbie has demonstrated her acting skills in the role for 2016’s Suicide Squad, 2020’s Birds of Prey, and most recently in a franchise reboot, 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Several actors have voiced the part for various projects, with The Flight Attendant’s Kaley Cuoco as the latest talent to lend her acting skills in the animated series based on the character. Robbie will be leaving Harley Quinn behind for a while as she prepares to launch her take on the Mattel doll, Barbie, in the titular role alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken for director Greta Gerwig.
