The Mandalorian is about to wrap up its second season and we are eager to find out how the events of this season will shake out. It certainly feels like there is going to be a serious change to the status quo of the show, but a new rumor is suggesting that things could change so drastically that we will have a new lead character when Season 3 gets underway.
Grace Randolph is suggesting that Boba Fett could be the new lead character in Season 3 of The Mandalorian. We had heard that a Boba Fett miniseries was about to start shooting, but that project was not included in the enormous Disney Investor Day announcements. This led to some speculation about what was going on with the Boba Fett series. Now, it seems like Randolph wants to posit that Boba Fett might not be getting his own standalone miniseries, but is instead taking over protagonist duties on The Mandalorian.
Now, it should be said that Grace Randolph is not reporting that this is the case. She has merely made the inference that Boba Fett might be taking over for Din Djarin on The Mandalorian. It is a little suspicious that Disney did not announce any substantial project that would have featured Boba Fett as a central character. After his surprising return at the beginning of this recent season of The Mandalorian, everyone has been waiting to see what happens with him next. Not hearing any news about that from the Disney Investor Day announcements does raise some worthwhile questions.
Would The Mandalorian drop its original lead character for a significant portion of time? Was this the reason Boba Fett was set up at the start of the season and is returning for this last run of Season 2 episodes? Could this be a way for him to slowly assimilate into a lead character role? And exactly how would that make fans feel? Would they be alright with a different Mandalorian taking the reins for a season while Din Djarin and Grogu were out of the picture for a while? Or would that end up being too big a deviation from what the audience will expect?
We have to imagine that there is some greater plan regarding Boba Fett. Bringing back such an iconic character would seem to indicate that The Mandalorian wanted to offer the Star Wars universe a chance to really dig into the character of Boba Fett. Was it always the intention for his story to play out in a different series? Could Disney be waiting to announce the Boba Fett miniseries shortly after the Season 2 finale of The Mandalorian? So many questions!
A lot of this will become much more clear once The Mandalorian wraps up its second season later this week. There is no doubt that the season has been building to a truly epic confrontation, and the show seems determined to rattle some cages before things are over. Could that even mean a change in the show’s protagonist? We are going to be on the edge of our seats for this one.
