Hold on to your red underwear folks – the return of Henry Cavill as Superman is imminent. Deadline, among several outlets, has been reporting that the 39-year-old British actor will be making a surprise appearance at this weekend’s San Diego Comic-Con to announce Man of Steel 2 and his return as the Last Son of Krypton. With recent Marvel offerings (except Spider-Man) failing to excite fans like they once did, DC is in a prime position to take the comic book movie throne once again. They need only reach back to their proven commodities – namely Michael Keaton and Henry Cavill – to win back nostalgia-hungry fans. Geekosity is reporting that, of the two, Cavill at least will appear at SDCC, which would be the biggest news to come out of pop culture’s biggest weekend of the year.

Man of Steel 2 has been an enigma for fans since the first film was released in 2013. The success of the first film was monstrous: it grossed nearly $300 million in the United States and over $650 million worldwide, ranking as the 4th highest-grossing film that year. Although some took issue with Zack Snyder’s vision for the character, Henry Cavill won universal praise for his portrayal of Clark Kent/Kal-El, capturing both the human and alien sides of the character with a performance rivaling Christopher Reeve’s iconic take on Superman. Most assumed a sequel would immediately follow, but Warner Bros.’ focus on building to a Justice League film (released in 2017, and then again in 2021 as Zack Snyder’s original vision) delayed it. Cavill went on to other roles, and turmoil at DC Entertainment derailed any chance for a follow-up.

That all may change on Saturday when Warner Bros. Discovery plans a key panel event to promote their upcoming theatrical releases. The panel, set for 10:15 a.m. PST in Hall H (where all the big events happen) has already announced that Dwayne Johnson and director Jaume Collet-Serra will appear to promote Black Adam. Zachary Levi will also be on hand to promote Shazam: Fury of the Gods, but DC could blow the lid of off Hall H by announcing Man of Steel 2 and having Henry Cavill himself appear. DC Entertainment had already made waves by not having a DC booth at San Diego Comic-Con for the first time ever (not counting the pandemic years), but this announcement could go a long way to restoring fan faith in DC movies.

Rumors have abounded that Black Adam would set up Man of Steel 2 by featuring Henry Cavill returning as Superman in a post-credits cameo. Black Adam himself Dwayne Johnson seemed to confirm those rumors in a response to a fan on Twitter, who said he was hoping for a Superman cameo. Saying that he has learned to always listen to his audience, Johnson responded “I always got you” to his request.

Even with the tweet, fans remain wary of any chance of a Man of Steel 2 or even a cameo by Henry Cavill in another DC film. The Superman cameo in 2019’s Shazam! never showed Cavill’s face, which infuriated fans who felt cheated. Cavill himself has lobbied for a return as Superman, telling Collider in 2021 that the role was personal to him, and stating “I would love to have the opportunity to play the Superman that we all know and love from the comics.” Since he last played the role, Cavill has stayed busy, with roles in Mission: Impossible – Fallout and as the lead in Netflix’s The Witcher. He’s also been rumored to play the next James Bond.
