Madame Web Star Wants Another Superhero Shot

Sony has been having it tough with their attempts at superhero movies other than Spider-Man. Morbius became nothing more than an internet meme, people are already side-eyeing the upcoming Kraven movie, and Madame Web had an atrocious run at the box office. But despite it all, it has not soured many involved on such projects, like Emma Roberts who has shared that she wants to do more superhero movies despite Madame Web’s failure.

Spidey’s Mom

Emma Roberts did not even get to play a superhero in Madame Web, instead having a limited role as Peter Parker’s mom who was pregnant with the future web slinger. Fans were very critical of the film’s connection to the Spider-Man movies, particularly that it appeared Sony did not even have permission to use many of the character’s names. Peter himself is awkwardly never actually referred to by his name. However, Roberts spoke positively about her desire to do more.

She Wants A Cape

“I just got to wear a nine-month pregnant belly,” Emma Roberts said of her role in the superhero film.

“Again, that is heroic! You don’t even know what that’s like. And then I had to do it on American Horror Story, for another six months of my life wearing a belly. I should have three kids by now, and I only have one, with the amount of times I’ve had to be pregnant.”

While Emma Roberts does not seem sour about her limited usage in Madame Web, she does make it clear that she absolutely wants to play a more central role in a future superhero movie.

“I would also love to play a witch again,” she said, referencing her past role in American Horror Story. “I’ve seen some witch comic book characters that I would be into.” Probably the most famous superhero witch right now is Scarlet Witch, but Roberts did not elaborate on which character exactly had caught her eye.

Undeterred By The Flop

Regardless, Emma Roberts makes it clear she had a fun time on Madame Web and that she simply wants to do something more action-oriented with her next superhero film. It is reassuring to hear that the negative critical response and poor financial returns on Madame Web did not turn her off of working in the genre again. Unfortunately, the same can not be said about some of her costars who were far less positive about the results of the film.

Dakota Johnson Won’t Be Along For The Ride

The main star of Madame Web, Dakota Johnson, shared that she does not plan to do anything like the movie again. While Emma Roberts just seemed happy to be in a superhero movie at all, Johnson sounds like she regrets even taking the project.

“I’m not surprised that this has gone down the way it has,” Johnson said of the movie’s failure.

Speaking on her place in the genre, Johnson continued by saying, “I probably will never do anything like it again because I don’t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, ‘Wait, what?'”

So if Emma Roberts does do another superhero movie, it sounds like she will definitely not be doing it with Dakota Johnson.

Space Cadet

Realistically, it can be difficult for actors to get another shot in the superhero genre once they have been tied to a failure, regardless of whether it is their fault. It took Ryan Reynolds passionately campaigning to play Deadpool to get himself another shot after starring in the panned Green Lantern movie.

So if Emma Roberts is serious about wanting to explore the superhero genre more, she may have to really leverage some of the connections she made.

However, for the time being, it seems Emma Roberts is putting superheroes on the backburner to explore being a producer.

Her next big project comes out of her own production company, Belletrist TV, and she will be producing and starring in the romantic comedy called Space Cadet. This will be one of her first major roles after Madame Web, so hopefully it fares better for her.
