Exclusive: Mad Max Series In Development
As one of the most beloved dystopian franchises ever crafted, Mad Max has celebrated massive success on the silver screen. And now, that post-apocalyptic world is ready to speed into new territory: the small screen. Our trusted and proven sources tell us that Warner Bros. is developing a Mad Max tv series for Max.
Today, the sci-fi franchise has produced four highly successful films, with a fifth set to release in 2024, and possibly a sixth after that. On top of that, Mad Max has spawned multiple novels, video games, and comics. However, this will be the first time a Mad Max series has ever been attempted.
We’ve exclusively learned that Warner Bros. is developing a Mad Max series to stream on Max.
It all started in 1979 when George Miller and Byron Kennedy created the original Mad Max film. Starring Mel Gibson as the titular character Max Rockatansky, Gibson reprised the role in both sequels, Mad Max 2 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.
After staying silent for 30 years, Max would once again race into popular media, as George Miller brought the idolized character back to life, this time through Tom Hardy. In 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Hardy gave the performance of his life beside Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa.
Longstanding fans of the Mad Max franchise and newcomers alike praised Mad Max: Fury Road. Today, it remains one of the greatest action films ever made. On Rotten Tomatoes, Fury Road boasts a 97 percent critic rating and an 86 percent audience score.
A follow-up Mad Max movie, Furiosa is set to release on May 24, 2024. It is considered a prequel film to Fury Road, and centers around Imperator Furiosa, this time being portrayed by Anya Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Nathan Jones, and Angus Sampson also appear in the film.
Longstanding fans of the Mad Max franchise and newcomers alike praised Mad Max: Fury Road, giving Warner Bros. every reason to bank on the success of the franchise with a new series.
The opportunities are nearly endless as to who the Mad Max series could focus on and which timeline the show could be set in. The series could be another prequel, going back to the beginning of the apocalypse depicting the downfall as resources started becoming scarce. In this scenario, we would likely get a fresh new Hollywood face to portray a young Max – or someone else.
It also could portray the story of a new hero, someone other than the titular antihero we’ve all come to love. While it is unlikely, Warner Bros. could even potentially bring Tom Hardy back into the fold on the small screen.
We’ve seen similar things done before with other high-profile actors, such as when Ewan McGregor reprised his role as Obi-Wan for his own Star Wars show on Disney+.
Mad Max: The Wasteland
Tom Hardy has long said that he planned on making another Mad Max film, known as Mad Max: The Wasteland. But this project has yet to be officially confirmed by Warner Bros., so it seems to be indefinitely stuck in developmental hell. Could a Mad Max series for Max be the studio’s answer to this mystery project?
Whatever and whomever the Mad Max TV show follows, given the sci-fi franchise’s extensive positive reception, we’re certain that the fandom will welcome the series full-throttle when it premieres.
