Macauley Culkin first came on the scene in about as big a fashion a child actor ever can, reaching international fame in his early years and becoming one of the most recognizable people in Hollywood basically at the age of 10. For how quickly it came, it’s remarkable that the young actor didn’t burn up hard and bright, and now more than 30 years later he’s having a mid-life career resurgence that’s seeing him taking on a number of interesting roles. His next one, according to Deadline, will be in Rich Flu, about a pandemic of sorts though it affects only certain people in order.

Apparently, Rich Flu will deal with a couple of different, seemingly unrelated concepts in a unique fashion. According to the earliest descriptions, the movie will be about a deadly virus that’s killing people off, but it seems to attack those with wealth. In the first wave of deaths, only billionaires are struck down by the virus, but after that it goes after the next in line (millionaires) and keeps attacking anyone with any perceived wealth. This thought experiment leads to a world gone “crazy” trying to give away possessions and “valuables” in order to be spared. It’s unclear who Macauley Culkin is playing in the film.

In addition to Macauley Culkin, the cast of Rich Flu will also include Rosamund Pike and Daniel Bruhl. Again, outside of the basic plot points, there hasn’t been a ton to suggest who each person will play in the flick. It’s being directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia whose last directorial effort, The Platform, dealt with other concepts related to wealth, status, and imprisonment. It told the story of a vertical prison where food is “passed down” to different levels. The movie earned solid critical marks for its take on the issues within society when it comes to the haves and the have-nots.

As for Macauley Culkin, he’s been in a couple of different productions of late that haven’t exactly lined up with the family-friendly Home Alone work that garnered him international fame. He played Mickey in this past season of American Horror Story, the 10th installment of the popular series. This story was titled Double Feature and earned both the series and Macauley Culkin himself praise from critics. It’s sitting at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.

And Macauley Culkin also had a guest role on a couple of episodes of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones. Though minor, it’s another sign that his childhood success on the big screen is becoming a thing of the past, with enough time removes from his time as Kevin McAllister for people to see him in a new light. And it’s a testament to the actor’s patience and talent that he’s been able to reinvent himself on the screen all of these years later. This story doesn’t always play out in a similar fashion.

We are still waiting to hear more specific details on when we can see Macauley Culkin and company in Rich Flu. It’s sure to be a thought-provoking film considering the nature of the story.
