Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin has returned to the screen in Megahex: Devil Night, an animated short to be included in Hulu’s The Paloni Show! Culkin will voice the character Mogg the Cat, who is the stoner boyfriend to Emma Chamberlain’s Meg the Witch. The Halloween special debuted on October 15, 2022.
Macaulay Culkin is best known for his role as Kevin in the Christmas classic Home Alone. The 1990 film was produced by John Hughes and directed by Christopher Columbus. Since its release, Home Alone has become a holiday staple and is adored by families.
The success of Home Alone led the studio to create multiple sequels. Macaulay Culkin reprised his role as Kevin in 1992’s Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. The sequel received mixed reviews from critics who pointed out the film’s darker tone.
Since starring in Home Alone, Macaulay Culkin has appeared as a child actor in numerous projects. He starred in the 1994 comedy film Richie Rich and played opposite Anna Chlumsky in My Girl. His last feature-length film was the 2019 comedy-drama Changeland.
Hearing that Macaulay Culkin is back getting projects is a great thing. It seemed for so long that the actor wasn’t getting any projects following his star-making turn as Kevin in Home Alone. It’s a problem many child actors face after a while, in which they get typecast forever and have a difficult time transitioning into more adult roles.
In addition to nabbing the animated project gig, Macaulay Culkin had a guest role in Danny McBride’s HBO series The Righteous Gemstones. Culkin played an estranged son from a previous marriage. The actor also does a voice in the adult animated music television special Entergalactic.
With Macaulay Culkin now seemingly having a comeback in the industry, the question now becomes whether he would be willing to return to the role that made him famous. For years, fans have wondered what became of Kevin after the end of Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. Some theorized that Kevin became the owner of a security company and is still preventing burglars from ruining Christmas.
Disney now owns the rights to the Home Alone IP after the company purchased 20th Century Fox and all of its libraries. They recently released a Home Alone movie on Disney+ called Home Sweet Home Alone. The film didn’t feature Macaulay Culkin and was critically panned upon its release.
As noted by Movie Web, Macaulay Culkin’s role in the Halloween animated special has a meta layer attached to it as he plays a character whose career has peaked much earlier than he expected it to. In a way, Culkin is playing up the fact that his career did derail after he became a famous child actor and is now making up for the lost time. Whether or not this voice role will be what leads studios to cast Culkin in major blockbuster projects or even a Home Alone sequel remains to be seen.
For now, it’s just great that Macaulay Culkin is getting the career resurgence he deserves after he helped give fans a wonderful holiday movie for the ages.
