Netflix is branching out in some rather interesting ways these days. On top of being the biggest streaming platform, the company has also started its own gaming division. While Netflix Games is currently carving out its identity, they are beginning to land some better titles. One such title is the ever-popular card game, Exploding Kittens. The card game took the world by storm, and now Netflix is adapting the said game into a mobile version for their Netflix Games division. On top of the game, the streaming platform is working on an accompanying animated series, which will star none other than Lucy Liu as one of the voices in the series.
Exploding Kittens deals with the centuries-old battle of Heaven vs. Hell. God and Satan have been thrust to Earth but are hilariously stuck in the bodies of chunky house cats. Now they must battle one another while trying to figure out how to go about such things as cats. The animation for the card game is certainly going to transfer over well to an animated series, as it is somewhat reminiscent of the Invader Zim animation style. There have been no announcements on who Lucy Liu is set to portray, but she has been cast alongside Tom Ellis, a superstar from the popular Lucifer series. Even though the obvious choice is to make Ellis the cat version of Satan, it would be hilarious to make him God. Abraham Lim, who has appeared in The Boys, Clickbait, and The Fix is also joining the new series.
Exploding Kittens became a fan-favorite game due to the ridiculous nature in which players much avoid the “exploding kitten” card, which ends in losing the game. The game was crowdfunded on Kickstarter and holds the record for most backers in the history of the crowdfunding app. It also ranks in the top 10 for the highest amount earned for a crowdfunded project. People love this game, and now Netflix is double-dipping in the form of a new animated series and mobile version of the game. Adding star talent like Luci Liu and Tom Ellis is going to take this new series far. Netflix is known for bringing in big-name actors for projects, but this will be the first time that the company is putting together a double effort in the form of a series and accompanying game. The Netflix Games version of Exploding Kittens will also feature two exclusive cards, with new powers, and added cards that will tie into the future series. The game will release this May, while the animated series is to follow in 2023.
Lucy Liu is coming off two small TV appearances as she portrayed herself in the HBO comedy series, Curb Your Enthusiasm. She also had a small role in the TV series, Death to 2021. While Exploding Kittens will take some time to be made, she is set to appear as the villain in the new Shazam! Fury of the Gods sequel. Liu will portray Kalypso, a vicious goddess that is the daughter of Atlas. We are not sure which role she will be better in, but the hope is she gets to play God in the Exploding Kitten series.
