Lord Of The Rings The War Of The Rohirrim Anime Leaves Rings Of Power In The Dust
The first look at The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is here, and it’s much more anime-style than fans were expecting. Overall, it looks like it’s going to be a fantastic trip back to Middle Earth as we meet Helm Hammerhand and his family. The first set of images shows off Helm Hammerhand, his daughter Hera, his other family members Haleth and Hama, and the antagonist, Wulf.
150 Years Before The Lord Of The Rings
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim takes place over 150 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and tells the story of a conflict between Rohan and the Dunlendings.
The conflict forces the King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, and his subjects to take residence in a fortress, which would eventually be known as Helm’s Deep. Brian Cox voices Hammerhand, Gaia Wise voices Hera, Luke Pasqualino voices Wulf, and the rest of the cast is rounded out by Lorraine Ashbourne, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna and Janine Duvitski.
One Returning Cast Member
While The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim takes place a bit too far in the past for most of our favorite Lord of the Rings characters to make an appearance, Miranda Otto will be reprising the role of Eowyn after playing the character in the original trilogy.
Eowyn is providing narration as a framing device for the story. Kenji Kamiyama directs from a screenplay by Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou, while Philippa Boyens, Joseph Chou, and Jason DeMarco produce.
A Very Different Look For The Franchise
Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh are also attached as executive producers for The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Needless to say, expectations are high for this animated film, as it might give us some indication of how well Warner Bros Discovery will handle the franchise going forward. The Amazon Prime series The Rings of Power was met with a lukewarm reception (though hopes are higher for the second season), and fans are eager to see a quality project return to the big screen.
Not The Only Movie In The Works
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim also isn’t the only new Lord of the Rings project in the works, as there’s also a live-action film titled Hunt for Gollum on the way. That film is also a prequel that tells the story of when Aragorn went on a quest, at Gandalf’s behest, to retrieve Gollum to prevent him from leaking secrets of the One Ring to Sauron.
Ian McKellan and Viggo Mortensen have both indicated their willingness to return to their respective roles as Gandalf and Aragorn, while Andy Serkis is already confirmed to be returning as Gollum while also taking on the director chair.
Fans Don’t Have Long To Wait
It’s safe to say that The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim images look great, but it’ll be interesting to see the first trailer so we can see what the animation looks like in action. Fortunately, we probably won’t have to wait too much longer. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim hits theaters on December 13, 2024.
