Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Is Exclusively On A New Streaming Platform
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is now available to stream on Netflix.
The entire Lord of the Rings trilogy is streaming on Netflix. The news was revealed in an official post on social media. “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future,” the platform wrote. “Peter Jackson’s incredible The Lord of the Rings trilogy comes to Netflix U.S. on February 1st!” However, it’s unclear if the service will house the extended versions too.
Based on the Lord of the Rings novel series by J. R. R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring debuted in December 2001, long before streaming was popular. Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the fantasy adventure captured the imagination of viewers. The story follows a hobbit named Frodo Baggins who, along with the Fellowship, embarks on a quest to destroy the One Ring before the Dark Lord Sauron finds it.
This was followed by The Two Towers and The Return of the King in 2002 and 2003, respectively, which continued the plot of the flagship movie. Directed by Peter Jackson, the entire trilogy was a critical and commercial success. The Lord of the Rings franchise, which will probably top the Netflix streaming charts, earned $2.991 billion at the global box office.
Although the entire trilogy was a hit, The Return of the King received the most accolades. At the 76th Academy Awards, the film won all eleven awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture. Lord of the Rings also became the second film series to win every award for Best Visual Effects, after the original Star Wars movies, which are streaming on Disney+.
The special effects in Lord of the Rings certainly contributed to the trilogy’s success before it was a streaming hit. But the incredible cast, who appeared in other projects on the streaming service, made the story so captivating. Portrayed by Elijah Wood, Frodo is an unlikely hero who proves that courage conquers all. The bond he shares with Sam (Sean Astin) serves as the emotional backdrop of the films.
The trilogy also features a strong cast of supporting characters. This includes Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, John Rhys-Davis as Gimli, Billy Boyd as Pippin, and Dominic Monaghan as Merry. Peter Jackson returned to the world of Middle-earth a few years later with The Hobbit trilogy. But unlike Lord of the Rings, those films didn’t earn the same critical acclaim and are not streaming on Netflix.
Interestingly, the Lord of the Rings trilogy has been streaming on Netflix before. But all three have never been on the platform at the same time until now. According to CBR, the movies have been off the service since March 2020. They were then housed on HBO Max. Lord of the Rings distributor New Line Cinema is a Warner Bros. Discovery studio, so it made sense that they would have their biggest film series on their own service.
While the Lord of the Rings movies is back on Netflix, how long they will stay on the streaming service remains unclear at present.
