Marvel’s Disney+ series have been critical successes for the most part, with Loki being a notable fan favorite. This is undoubtedly due, in part, to Tom Hiddleston continuing to kill it as the God of Mischief. It’s also due to the writing of creator Michael Waldron who recently appeared for an interview on The Playlist to hint that Loki Season 2 may be making some changes to the formula.

The first season of Loki was originally imagined as a limited series, meaning we would have had one season and that’s it. Instead, the series ended on a cliffhanger and introduced us to the concept of the Marvel multiverse along with Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conquerer. Since it was originally a limited series, it was only greenlit for six episodes. When asked in The Playlist interview if Loki Season 2 would stick to the six-episode format, Waldron was a little coy saying “time will tell.” While this isn’t confirmation or denial, it wouldn’t be surprising if we got more episodes this time around. Without the limited series restriction, there are a ton of ways that the new season of Loki could go.

One thing is for certain, Loki Season 2 will surely be dealing with the fallout of the multiverse being unleashed by Sylvie, a female multiverse variant of Loki. Since the multiverse was unleashed, the MCU has fully been embracing it in their big tentpole blockbusters. First, we got to see all of our favorite Spider-Men and Spider-Man villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw characters returning from both the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films and the Amazing Spider-Man films with Andrew Garfield.

Next up, the multiverse is set to be the true star of the show with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hitting screens on May 6. This movie will see Doctor Strange fully opening and exploring the multiverse, meaning there will undoubtedly be far-reaching repercussions for the MCU as a whole. AntMan and the Wasp: Quantumania is also set to feature Kang as a major character, so the events of Loki continue to seep into the rest of Marvel’s properties, making the events of Loki arguably the most important Marvel Disney+ show to date, from a story standpoint.

It will be interesting to see where Loki Season 2 picks up in the grand scheme of the MCU. Since it’s coming out after some of these multiversal movies, the show could certainly address some of the events that happen in them. Then again, Loki and the Time Variance Authority operate out of the timestream, so they could have some of their own problems to deal with that are outside of the events of the movie. In either case, fans are surely looking forward to what’s going to happen next in the world of Loki. Loki is expected to film the second season this summer, so we should hopefully see new episodes in 2023. At the very least, here’s to hoping we get some more of everyone’s favorite alligator variant.
