Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, has finally broken her silence about her father’s high-profile court battle against his ex-wife Amber Heard. While she didn’t reveal her opinion on the allegations or the verdict, the rising actress spoke about the difficulties caused by the highly publicized lawsuit. In an interview with ELLE: Fashion Magazine, Lily-Rose Depp hinted that the lawsuit was not easy for her to deal with and that the media shined a spotlight on what was, to her at least, a personal and private matter, saying:

When it’s something that’s so private and so personal that all of a sudden becomes not so personal, I feel really entitled to my secret garden of thoughts.

In the lawsuit, Johnny Depp claimed that Heard lied about being abused, causing harm to his career. Heard countersued over comments that Johnny Depp’s lawyer made, claiming that Heard and her friends fabricated a crime scene. The heavily-covered lawsuit ended with Johnny Depp winning a $15 million verdict against Heard. Heard, in turn, won $2 million for her counterclaim.

However, that verdict wasn’t the end of the family drama. After the trial, unsealed documents revealed some unsavory behavior on the part of Johnny Depp, including an attempt to submit nude photos of Heard into the public record, and trying to blame Heard for a friend’s tragic death in a car accident.

The revelations led to increased support for Heard. The actress has appealed the verdict, and Depp is taking Heard back to court over the successful counter-suit, claiming that he can’t be liable for his lawyer’s comments.

Johnny Depp’s career is moving forward. He will soon star in the upcoming film Jeanne du Barry, playing the infamous King Louis XV of France. Heard, meanwhile, is allegedly living in a foreign country under a false name.

In the face of this drama, it comes as no surprise that Lily-Rose Depp doesn’t want her career to be tied to her father’s public image. In the ELLE interview, she stated that she doesn’t want to be defined by any of the men in her life — neither her father’s nor any other man’s, saying “I also think that I’m not here to answer for anybody, and I feel like for a lot of my career, people have really wanted to define me by the men in my life, whether that’s my family members or my boyfriends, whatever,” she said. “I’m really ready to be defined for the things that I put out there.”

Stepping out from the shadow cast by a superstar such as Johnny Depp is no small feat. However, Lily-Rose Depp is making a good show of it and has been striking it out on her own in recent years. Last year, she co-starred in the unusual arthouse film Wolf, which follows two patients in an abusive mental asylum that specializes in people who believe themselves to be animals.

That same year, she appeared in the apocalyptic Christmas comedy Silent Night, the psychological science fiction film Voyagers, and the crime thriller film Crisis. Her career has featured an eclectic mix of films, starting with the 2014 Kevin Smith horror comedy Tusk, which is about a man who is involuntarily turned into a walrus by a crazed seaman.

This year, Lily-Rose Depp will star in the HBO series The Idol. She will play an up-and-coming pop star in a relationship with a self-help guru turned cult leader. The Idol had a troubled production, with multiple re-shoots and delays. HBO states that it expects to release the series in 2023.
