A24 has been on quite the roll lately, churning out recent hits like the critically acclaimed drama The Whale, which stars Brendan Fraser in arguably the best performance of his career, as well as X, the latest feature from director Ty West. The studio, which is most recognized for its thought-provoking horror pictures, has began to branch out into other genres, and the upcoming drama The Iron Claw is one of the latest non-horror related projects the studio is backing. Zac Efron was already announced to star in the forthcoming film, and now Deadline is reporting that Lily James has also joined the cast.
The Iron Claw will revolve around the story of the Von Erichs, a dynasty of wrestlers who made a tremendous impact on the sport from the 1960s to present day. Zac Efron has been cast as Kevin Von Erich, while Jeremy Allen White will portray Kerry Von Erich. As far as Lily James, her role has not been revealed at this time.
The story behind The Iron Claw is quite interesting, and it’s one that’s unfortunately ridden with tragedy. Five of six brothers in the Von Erich family died under unusual circumstances between the ages of six and 33. Kevin Von Erich, who Efron portrays in the upcoming film, is the last surviving brother, and it’s possible Lily James could play his love interest.
In addition to Lily James, Zac Efron, and Jeremy Allen White, The Iron Claw stars Harrison Dickinson, Maura Tierney, Holt McCallany, Cazzey Louis Cereghino, Jim Gleason, and Kevin Anton. Sean Durkin is helming the picture based off a script he wrote. A24 will produce the upcoming film with Tessa Ross, Derrin Schlesinger, and Harrison Huffman.
Although she’s a relatively newer actress, Lily James is quickly making a name for herself in the industry. Since 2010, she’s accumulated close to 40 acting credits, and her resume continues to grow. Initially appearing in television shows like Just William and Secret Diary of a Call Girl, she’s seamlessly made the transition to more high-profile projects.
Lily James is arguably best known for her role as Elizabeth Layton in the biographical drama Darkest Hour. The story is set in May 1940, where the fate of World War II hangs on Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on knowing that it could mean the end of the British Empire. The Joe Wright-directed film received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture of the Year in 2018.
Additionally, Lily James received much deserved praise for her portrayal of Pamela Anderson in the Hulu limited series Pam & Tommy. The series was a huge hit for the streamer, receiving 10 Emmy nominations including one for best limited series. James also received a nomination for her outstanding performance on the show.
Up next for the 33-year-old actress is the crime comedy Providence, which is currently in post-production. In addition to Lily James, the film stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tim Blake Nelson, Tracy Lords, and Joey Lauren Adams. James is also set to appear in the period drama Finalmente I’alba, alongside Willem Dafoe, Joe Keery, Rachel Sennott, Benjamin Stender, and Eric Alexander.
