A Liam Neeson Fantasy Sequel Is Blowing Up On Streaming

Seemingly out of nowhere, Wrath of the Titans is blowing up on HBO Max overseas. The film, which features Liam Neeson as the Greek god Zeus, suddenly became the second-most-popular movie on HBO Max in multiple Latin American countries, according to streaming tracking service FlixPatrol. The sudden surge in Latin American popularity puts the film right behind the short documentary Black Adam: Savior or Destroyer in the region — a film that explores the DC antihero’s complicated character. The film’s sudden popularity makes Wrath of the Titans the seventh-most-popular movie on the platform worldwide, even though it’s not trending in any other region.
The 2012 film is a sequel to 2010’s Clash of the Titans, itself a remake of the 1981 film starring L.A. Law star Harry Hamlin. Liam Neeson played the same role in both Wrath of the Titans and Clash of the Titans. Another sequel, Revenge of the Titans was planned. However, the first two films were critically panned, and the second film didn’t meet box office expectations, so the trilogy was never completed.
Following up on the plot of its predecessor, Wrath of the Titans continues to follow the adventures of the demigod Perseus, played by Sam Worthington. In the film, Perseus’s father (Liam Neeson’s Zeus) is imprisoned by the gods Hades, Poseidon, and Ares. Meanwhile, the walls of Tartarus break, releasing a horde of monsters into the world. Perseus must defeat the monsters, save Zeus, and stop the gods’ plan to revive the imprisoned Titan Kronos.
Liam Neeson would likely have played Zeus once again if Warner Bros. greenlit the sequel. However, there’s no information about what the sequel’s plot would have been. Producer Basil Iwanyk has claimed that there were no fresh ideas for Revenge of the Titans, hinting that the film’s plot was never fully realized.
It’s not entirely clear what caused Wrath of the Titans to suddenly surge in popularity on HBO Max. The platform has featured the movie for some time now, and it does not appear to be leaving any time soon. However, its sudden surge in popularity is unlikely to revive the long-dead franchise. Both starring actors in the Titans series have their hands full for the foreseeable future.
Despite promises of the sequel vanishing into thin air, Liam Neeson has had no shortage of roles to play. Most recently, he was cast in the upcoming Sci-fi thriller, Cold Storage. He’s also featured in five more films that are currently in production: the crime thriller Thug, the action film Retribution, the western In the Land of Saints and Sinners, the thriller Charlie Johnson in the Flames, and the action comedy reboot The Naked Gun.
Like Liam Neeson, Sam Worthington has remained busy after the failure of the Titans series. Not only is he set to appear in all four Avatar sequels, but he will also appear in The Georgetown Project, Hello Stranger, Transfusion, Seacole, Lift, Breathe, Horizon, and CounterPlay.
