Popular stars like Leonardo DiCaprio will probably join Squid Game if the show makes it to a third season. The revelation was made by writer and director, Hwang Dong-hyuk who ruled out the possibility of DiCaprio starring in Season 2 since the upcoming installment is still set in Korea. The creator of Netflix’s most-watched show of all time was taking part in a special Emmy-winning press conference following the show’s six wins. “Maybe if time and chances allow we should ask him [DiCaprio] to join the game,” said Hwang.
After adding that his team already joked about asking Leonardo DiCaprio to be on Squid Game, Hwang also explained that Netflix has upped the budget for Season 2. He is currently writing the new season which will begin production in 2023 and air a year later. The 51-year-old said he’s already decided which games will be featured, but didn’t reveal any details. Additionally, he urged the media to keep the information to themselves if they found out.
“I beg you not to write articles about the games because the audience needs to feel the suspense and thrill of what’s coming next,” he said via Deadline. The first season of Squid Game revolved around a contest where 456 players (who are all in deep financial debt) risk their lives to play a series of deadly children’s games for the chance to win a $35 million prize. The series received 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, so it’s not surprising that Leonardo DiCaprio is a fan.
Although an appearance from Leonardo DiCaprio is not on the cards right now, Hwang did confirm some minor details to get fans excited. While the plot remains a mystery, viewers can expect Seong Gi-hun and the Front Man to return alongside the introduction of Cheol-su – Young-hee’s boyfriend. The second season of Squid Game will also feature plenty of deadly original challenges. But the director didn’t elaborate because he didn’t want to give away any spoilers.
Meanwhile, Leonardo DiCaprio fans can look forward to seeing the actor in Killers of the Flower Moon. Billed as a Western crime drama, the film is directed by Martin Scorsese from a screenplay he wrote with Eric Roth. Based on the best-selling 2017 non-fiction book of the same name, the story follows members of the Osage tribe in northeastern Oklahoma who are murdered under mysterious circumstances in the 1920s. This sparks a major FBI investigation led by 29-year-old J. Edgar Hoover and former Texas Ranger Tom White.
Starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, who also serves as producer, is Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lily Gladstone, and Brendan Fraser. The film marks the sixth collaboration between Scorsese and the 47-year-old. It is also the 10th collaboration between the director and De Niro. The project is produced by Sikelia Productions and Appian Way Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures and Apple TV+.
The Leonardo DiCaprio starrer is said to have a $200 million budget – the largest amount ever spent on a movie filmed in Oklahoma. Killers of the Flower Moon is expected to premiere at Cannes Film Festival in May 2023.
