Christopher Nolan might not be human. That is proved by the fact that some of his more recent films tackle subject matter that is far beyond our understanding of space, reality, and time. One of the most mind-bending of these films is that of Inception. The 2010 hit, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio, is currently streaming on Netflix as of April 1st. The long-standing thriller has been directed for over 10 years, and now fans can have another chance to watch the film on the top streaming platform.
Inception follows the life of Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), who has made a name for himself in corporate espionage. This highly skilled thief can enter people’s minds and steal secrets from their subconscious. He can also plant ideas into someone’s subconscious, which makes the person believe that the idea was there’s all along. This trick is known as Inception. Cobb has been outlawed from entering the United States, and because of that, he can no longer see his children. He is then hired by a man named Saito, to implant an idea into the head of his competitor’s son. Should Cobb be successful in his attempts to trick Robert Fischer to dissolve his father’s company, Saito promises to get rid of the stringent rules to keep Cobb outlawed from the United States. While Cobb’s crew and Saito believe Inception to be highly risky and somewhat impossible, Cobb assures them that it can be done. It is revealed that he performed Inception on his wife, but the resulting effect caused her to take her own life. Cobb was blamed for her death, and thusly painted as a fugitive. He can no longer build dream worlds due to the guilt that he feels from performing Inception on his wife. She now haunts his subconscious and causes issues for him at every turn.
While the film has been out for 12 years, we don’t want to ruin the ending of the film, so if you have not seen it yet, look away now. Inception has arguably one of the most ambiguous endings of any film. While these dream builders and thieves enter people’s subconscious, they can also lose their grip on reality because of this. The crew brings with them tokens that they use to make sure they have escaped a dream world and are now back in reality. Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) has a spinning metal top that he spins and stops to make sure that he is back in reality. When the crew successfully performs Inception on Robert Fischer and succeeds, Saito follows through on his promise to get Cobb back into the United States. The ending of the film sees Cobb reunited with his kids, as he spins his metal top on a table to make sure that what is experiencing, is real. The final shot of the film focuses on the top spinning while Cobb hugs his children. The debate on whether he is actually experiencing reuniting with his kids has been argued for over 10 years.
Inception currently has an 87% “certified fresh” critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an even higher audience rating of 91%. The budget for the film was a reported $180 million, but it garnered over $836 million in worldwide box office numbers. Based on Nolan’s huge success with The Dark Knight, he was able to convince Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures to allow an over $100 million advertisement expenditure. It clearly worked out for all involved. The film was the fourth highest grossing in 2010 and is considered one of the best films of the 2010 to 2020 decade. It won four Academy Awards including Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects. It was also nominated for several others including Best Picture. Leonardo DiCaprio was joined by an all-star cast that included Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Elliot Page, Michael Caine, and Cillian Murphy.
Inception is currently streaming on Netflix, and now is the time to watch this action-based science fiction masterpiece from director Christopher Nolan. Once you watch the film, you can understand more about why Nolan might not be from this planet. The man writes some of those most thought-provoking stories of any filmmaker. Leonardo DiCaprio is fantastic in the film, and hopefully, he and Nolan can work together again in the near future.
