Leonardo DiCaprio Set To Break Dwayne Johnson’s Record

Action, adventure, comedy, and a star-studded cast– Netflix’s Red Notice has it all, right? And what more does a film starring the likes of Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot need to maintain its position amongst the most-watched films on the streamer? Apparently, the heist-comedy drama is all set to lose its coveted rank to Adam McKay’s climate change satire film, Don’t Look Up, lead by the Oscar-winning cast of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
As reported by Deadline, the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer has been watched 152.29 million hours globally in the week of December 27-January 2. Netflix has officially released the numbers and confirmed that Don’t Look Up is busy breaking records for the streamer’s history. So far, it is the first title to attract the most viewing hours in a single week. Also, it’s already the streamer’s third most-watched film. This title is set in the first 28 days duration, so we’ll have to see yet where it gets to in that period, but this means Don’t Look Up is well on its way to dethrone Sandra Bullock’s Bird Box, which is second on the list behind Dwayne Johnson’s Red Notice, which recently took the number one spot.
Director Adam McKay also took to Twitter to celebrate the success of his film and shared that he was “straight-up flabbergasted” by the reception the film is getting. Don’t Look Up has already been nominated in four categories at the 79th Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, Best Actor, Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Actress Motion Picture Musical or Comedy (Jennifer Lawrence), and Best Screenplay (Adam McKay and David Sirota).
Don’t Look Up tells the story of two low-level astronomers, Kate Dibiasky and Dr. Randall Mindy, who make a terrifying discovery–a massive comet is heading towards Earth at top speed and possesses the ability to wipe all traces of life from the planet upon collision. Aware that urgent steps need to be taken to avert the disaster, the duo tries everything from going on a giant media tour, appearing on talk shows, chatting up with politicians (even the President). But no one is listening and are hardly concerned that the world is about to end, thus prompting Kate and Randall to take matters into their own hands.
The film has been garnering majorly positive reviews, especially for the performances of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. But interestingly, Don’t Look Up almost didn’t get this perfect lead cast. Initially, Adam McKay was afraid that DiCaprio would not be willing to work with him as the actor has worked with the likes of Martin Scorcese. McKay revealed that while it was easier to get Jennifer Lawrence on board, he didn’t harbor the same hopes when it came to the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood actor. But once he read the script, DiCaprio wasted no time in saying yes to the role.
