The Legend Of Zelda Director Reveals The Best Possible Inspiration For Movie
The Legend of Zelda film is finally beginning development, after decades of demands from the hit video game franchise’s fans around the world. Director Wes Ball, best known for his work on the Maze Runner franchise, has expressed interest in emulating the style of one beloved filmmaker for the upcoming adaptation. According to Entertainment Weekly, Wes Ball hopes to craft his Legend of Zelda film in the style of a live-action Hayao Miyazaki production.
Wes Ball Takes Inspiration From Hayao Miyazaki Movies
Miyazaki is best known for his extensive and influential anime filmography, including such worldwide hits as Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle, and most recently, The Boy And The Heron. With a live-action The Legend of Zelda film on the way, Wes Ball hopes to bring Miyazaki’s incomparable style to life in a bold new direction. Ball has expressed multiple times in the past that he is a massive fan of the Studio Ghibli filmmaker’s work, with The Legend of Zelda being the perfect film to showcase his influence.
More Whimsical Than Lord Of The Rings
Ball clarified these comments in response to some fans expecting to see a Lord of the Rings-style movie in the Nintendo adaptation, with the filmmaker specifying that he wants the fantasy-adventure to be more whimsical and lighthearted than Peter Jackson’s classic trilogy. With Jurassic World scribe Derek Connolly hired to pen The Legend of Zelda‘s screenplay, and Wes Ball attached to give his own creative spin on the Studio Ghibli style, fans have begun swelling with anticipation for the upcoming movie.
What Is The Legend Of Zelda About?
The Legend of Zelda will center on the playable character Link, as he travels through Hyrule with the Master Sword in hand to protect Princess Zelda from the evil clutches of marauders and tyranny. As far as the specific plot of the film, or which of the dozens of games the film will be borrowing elements from, there has been no confirmation at this time.
Of course, the fervor for The Legend of Zelda has never been higher amongst Nintendo fans, as the most recent games, Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, have been called some of the best of their kind.
Video Game Adaptations More Popular Than Ever Before
To date, Nintendo has never officially licensed The Legend of Zelda for an original film outing, despite the incredible fanfare the IP has received. Now, it seems that the Japanese game company has begun to change its tune on film adaptations, particularly in the wake of the incredibly successful Super Mario Bros. Movie which premiered in April. The film brought in more than $1.3 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.
The Legend Of Zelda Movie Still In Early Stages Of Development
This occasion is massive for Wes Ball as well, who is, first and foremost, a huge fan of the Legend of Zelda franchise. The filmmaker has been dreaming of helming a film following Link for more than a decade, making his appointment truly special. With Ball’s commitment to the franchise noted and celebrated, fans can rest assured the filmmaker will give the project his all, especially if he plans to live up to his promise to deliver a live-action Hayao Miyazaki style film.
