It feels that every day now we’re hearing of lives being taken by gun violence. In a terrifying and tragic moment for the cast and crew of Law & Order: Organized Crime, one of their own team members was lost today due to a senseless act of firearms violence at a filming location in the Greenpoint neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The victim’s name has not been released yet in order to allow family members time to be reached, but we do know that he was just 31 years old and worked as a parking enforcement officer for the series. Just another day on the job of the NBC drama, doing the task he was assigned. The young man was murdered while sitting in a car. Shots rang out around 5:15 a.m. ET, and he was rushed to a hospital. Sadly, by 6 a.m. he was pronounced dead.

A spokeswoman for NBC and Universal Television said that the network was “terribly saddened” to find out about the killing on the set of Law & Order. An arrest hasn’t been made at the time of this report, but the spokeswoman mentioned that they would be teaming up and helping law enforcement in their investigation. She rounded out the comments by sending her condolences to the loved ones affected by the brutal and senseless act of violence.

The slaying on the set of Law & Order comes just days after another shooting happened at a comedy club in North Carolina. On Saturday night, Craig Robinson of The Office was gearing up to take the stage when it was reported that a man came into the venue with a gun. Terror spread and everyone, including Robinson and the other comedians slated to perform, rushed to the venue next door to take cover. Later, the gunman sprayed bullets outside the club but luckily didn’t strike anyone. Everyone got home safely. The occurrences at the comedy club as well as on the filming set are just more reminders that everyday places like work, school, restaurants, etc. aren’t as safe as we once knew them to be.

As for Law & Order: Organized Crime, the series is in the middle of production on its third season. The show is an offshoot of SVU and followed NYPD’s Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) from the origin series. Along with Meloni, the series also stars Danielle Moné Truitt, Ainsley Seiger, and Nona Parker Johnson as their characters pull together to bring down some of the biggest, baddest, and toughest groups of crime syndicates New York City has to offer. Bryan Goluboff acts as showrunner.

The news of the killing on the set of Law & Order isn’t only deeply saddening, but also incredibly traumatic for those who are clocking into the workplace day in and day out. Knowing that one of their own was murdered while just performing his job is sure to mess with everyone’s heads and until, and possibly beyond, the killer is apprehended it is sure to have aftershocks through the entire franchise community. Along with those at NBC, we send our condolences to the family and friends of the victim whose life was lost during this senseless and violent act.
