Bella Ramsey Will Be Covered In Hair For Their Next Movie
Bella Ramsey will play a woman with a rare infliction that covers her entire body with hair in Monstrous Beauty.
Fans of cinema have seen many actors undergo radical transformations. Many actors like Christian Bale and recently Brendan Fraser in The Whale have undergone significant physical changes in order to play their roles. Now, according to a Deadline report, The Last of Us actor Bella Ramsey is taking on a hairy and monstrous new look for their next role in the period drama Monstrous Beauty.
The Last of Us’s Bella Ramsey will be starring as Barbara Field in the film written and directed by Romola Garia. Monstrous Beauty centers around Field, an aspiring playwright afflicted with a rare condition that means she is entirely covered in hair. When Field is offered a place in the court of King Charles II, she uses the help of famous actress and the king’s mistress Nell Gwyn to help bring Field’s play to life.
Monstrous Beauty’s themes of challenging the patriarchy, analyzing a person’s merit beyond their looks, and critique of the upper crust coincide well with Bella Ramsey’s other roles, including in The Last of Us, where they’ve often played characters who challenge authority. The film mixes real historical characters with fiction and also stars Dominic West, Fiona Shaw, and Ruth Negga. Fans may recognize West from playing Jimmy McNulty in HBO’s The Wire, Shaw from her role as Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter film series, and Negga from the biographical romantic drama film Loving.
The Last of Us actor Bella Ramsey actually got their start in another well-known HBO hit series. Ramsey’s first credited role was playing Lyanna Mormont in the HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones. The young actor quickly became a fan-favorite for their stellar acting and their character’s unrelenting spunk.
Bella Ramsey’s most recent big break is with this season’s HBO megahit The Last of Us, based on the video game series of the same name. The Last of Us is a science fiction series set in a post-outbreak United States where humans are forced to survive a pandemic in which a brain infection causes humans to turn into zombie-like creatures with a penchant for devouring others. As of this March, The Last of Us officially surpassed the Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon as the platform’s most popular series since the original Game of Thrones.
In The Last of Us, Ramsey plays the young and rebellious Ellie Williams, a 14-year-old orphan who viewers soon discover has a mysterious immunity to the Cordyceps brain infection. Bella Ramsey stars alongside media darling Pedro Pascal, as well as Anna Torv, Lamar Johnson, and Parks & Recreation’s Nick Offerman, who appeared in the series’ critically lauded third episode, which tenderly depicted a tragic queer romance. Fans have also been smitten with the father-daughter relationship between Ramsey’s Ellie and Pascal’s Joel, who has been tasked with delivering Ramsey to safety throughout the hellscape that the United States has become.
With The Last of Us already slated for a second season and a third season highly likely, Bella Ramsey is quickly becoming one of the premiere young actors in Hollywood. Their performance in Monstrous Beauty may be a tipping point on the path to superstardom.
