Actor and singer Lady Gaga is currently traveling the world as part of her much-anticipated tour for the COVID-era Chromatica Ball Tour. The tour was initially planned to take place in 2020, but the pandemic had other plans for the New York-born talent. In the last couple of years, Gaga has wowed audiences with performances at her Las Vegas residency, as well as her acting abilities in House of Gucci. She also lent her voice to “Hold My Hand,” the theme song played during the end credits of the blockbuster summer release, Top Gun: Maverick. In between tour dates, Gaga has signed on to play Harley Quinn in the upcoming sequel to Joker. With this casting news, many of Lady Gaga’s fans are taking to social media to air their approval of one of their favorite singers playing an iconic character.

The response on Twitter to Lady Gaga’s official casting announcement as Harley Quinn is pretty remarkable. The video that Gaga posted revealing the film’s name to be Joker: Folie a Deux is set against a backdrop of her character alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck. The song “Cheek to Cheek” can be heard playing in the background, a song made famous by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers for the 1935 film Top Hat. According to MovieWebJoker: Folie a Deux will be a musical, so singing in the movie shouldn’t be a problem for the internationally recognized voice of Lady Gaga. Not to mention that while he isn’t a pop star, Joaquin Phoenix is no stranger to singing on the big screen, with his experience playing acting and singing as the late Johnny Cash in 2005’s Walk the Line.

Lady Gaga’s casting in the sequel to Joker is welcome news not only to her fans but most likely to moviegoers everywhere. Gaga provided one-half of the singing duo in 2018’s A Star is Born alongside Bradley Cooper in a role that won the artist her first Academy Award. A Star is Born was a massive hit with audiences as the film went on to gross $436 million at the box office against a budget of $36 million. She was also featured as one of the stars of the fifth season of American Horror Story as The Countess, which earned her a Golden Globe Award for her performance.

Taking over the part of Harley Quinn will be no easy feat for Lady Gaga, primarily because the role was recently performed to great success by Margot Robbie. Joaquin Phoenix had the arduous task of playing The Joker after Heath Ledger’s legendary performance in a similar role. Gaga has some work cut out for her since Robbie’s performance is still fresh in many fans’ minds. Variety reports that the song “Cheek to Cheek” has also been made famous by Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett singing the duet together, so Gaga may already be enjoying her time as Harley Quinn with the teaser released today. Nevertheless, the fact that the sequel will now be a musical should make for great fun when the film is eventually released in 2024.
