Lady Gaga Wants To Forget About Joker 2 After Box Office Failure?
After the phenomenal success of the first film, nobody could have expected the Joker sequel to be such a spectacular critical and commercial failure. Now that the movie has proven to be so bad that it makes the worst of the DCEU look absolutely brilliant, one of its biggest stars is seemingly trying to distance herself from this flop.
According to an insider, Lady Gaga’s “team is quietly looking at other projects they can roll out as they want to move on” from the failure of Joker 2 “as quickly as possible.”
Lady Gaga Disappointed
As for the musician-turned-actor, she is reportedly blindsided by the reaction to her latest film.
The insider claims that Lady Gaga “is surprised by the response to Joker 2 and is shocked that people don’t love it after the response it received from critics before it premiered.”
This disappointment is even greater because “she put so much heart into the movie and has so much respect for the DC comics fan base.”
Joker 2 A Critical Disaster
Even if you’re a superfan of both Lady Gaga and the Joker, you might wonder what critical response this is referring to, especially as the sequel has an abysmal 33 percent critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, when the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, it received a 12-and-a-half-minute ovation from an audience who seemed to adore both Lady Gaga and lead Joker actor Joaquin Phoenix.
To put it mildly, it seems that festival attendees have very different tastes than general audiences and professional critics do (notably, Venice Film Festival audiences hated Fight Club when it premiered).
Lady Gaga Thinking Oscars?
Summing it up, the insider claims that Lady Gaga “is disappointed that Joker is pretty much a bomb,” and “She thought that this film could get her an Oscar nomination, especially since the first film was such a success and Joaquin won an Oscar.”
That doesn’t seem likely to happen, but her hopes aren’t as crazy as they might seem. Certainly, Phoenix’s 2019 Oscar win for Best Actor seemed incredibly unlikely, but that film had something that Folie à Deux doesn’t: a groundswell of public support that led to the movie earning over one billion dollars at the box office.
Won’t Derail Her Career
Most of the people involved with its production seem eager to distance themselves from the failure, but Lady Gaga is reportedly determined to not let Joker 2’s failure derail her burgeoning film career.
The insider claims that despite the lack of details about what it will even be about, “She would now like to land a role in Quentin Tarantino‘s next and final film…she wants to audition.”
That may sound a tad presumptive and even pretentious, but we can’t exactly fault Gaga for being such a film nerd, as she apparently considers it “a bucket list moment for her to be involved.”
Acting Wasn’t The Problem
And in all fairness, neither Lady Gaga nor Joaquin Phoenix were the biggest problems with Joker 2…they both acted their hearts out, but there are limits to what even the most talented performers can do with a sloppy script.
While everyone tries to figure out what went wrong with this sequel featuring Batman’s greatest villain, it seems clear that this cinematic failure (it got a D Cinemascore, the lowest ever given to a comic book movie) rests squarely on the shoulders of superstar director Todd Phillips.
Uncompromising Vision
His unflinching and uncompromising vision gave us a sequel that effectively negates most of the first film’s profits, leaving Warner Bros. with a “hangover” that’s not likely to go away anytime soon. And right now, the chances of him directing another big-budget studio film seem to be as dead as the Joker himself.
