Kurt Russell Returning To His Greatest Role? Fans Get Excited After Actor’s Comments
There are few cinematic duos as consistently great as John Carpenter directing and Kurt Russell in the lead role. Perhaps one of the best examples of this is their iconic 1986 Big Trouble in Little China. Apparently, Russell would be up for returning as Jack Burton in a sequel to the film, but he has a few conditions attached.
Up For A Sequel If John Carpenter Returns
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Kurt Russell said that he would be willing to return for a Big Trouble in Little China sequel if the script was better than the first one and if John Carpenter would be willing to come back to direct. Russell said, “never say never,” and even jokingly suggested that getting Carpenter on board wouldn’t be that hard, saying, “We could slap John Carpenter around a bit and say, ‘Come on, John, let’s go do this.” Whether or not this scenario ever actually comes to fruition remains to be seen.
Plenty Of New Material From The Comics
Although Kurt Russell has only played Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China once, the character has continued on in comic books, so there’s possibly some source material that a potential screenwriter could utilize in a sequel. Plus, Russell and Carpenter could add another potentially classic film to their legacy that includes films like Escape from New York, The Thing, and Escape from Los Angeles. However, one does have to wonder if this potential sequel would conflict with the rumored project that Dwayne Johnson reportedly has in the works.
Dwayne Johnson’s Involvement
There is a potential project that Dwayne Johnson is involved in that has been reported to be a reboot or spiritual sequel to Big Trouble in Little China. Kurt Russell and Johnson have previously worked together, so there’s certainly a chance they could team up for a proper Big Trouble in Little China sequel rather than a reboot. It’s definitely something that fans might be more on board with than a spiritual sequel.
Kurt Russell As Jack Burton
Kurt Russell starred in Big Trouble in Little China as truck driver Jack Burton, who finds himself in a conflict in San Francisco’s Chinatown involving an ancient Chinese prince and a crime lord kidnapping the fiancee of Jack’s best friend. While the film has since gained a sizable fanbase through video store rentals and direct sales, it was a commercial flop upon release. The reported budget was somewhere in the ballpark of $19 to $25 million and it only made $11 million, with reviews being relatively mixed.
Now that Kurt Russell’s Big Trouble in Little China is an iconic classic, there is a much better chance that a sequel could be a massive success at the box office. Especially if Dwayne Johnson, who is usually a box office draw, is involved in the project. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Russell, Carpenter, and Johnson can make this project happen.
