Krysten Ritter joined the ranks of the Marvel Universe when she took the role of Jessica Jones on the Netflix show of the same name. While the show lasted only three seasons, the character was a refreshing spin on the comic book/ superhero theme with Ritter’s Jones a standoff-ish and brooding drinker who also just happened to have some remarkable superpowers at her disposal. Fans were rightfully annoyed when the show was canceled. But there’s reason for some optimism the character could be making a comeback. Though very much only a rumor at this point, insider Daniel Richtman has it that there’s talk Ritter could return as Jessica Jones in Disney’s Marvel Universe.
The discussion around Krysten Ritter returning as Jessica Jones would put her in a cameo role in the upcoming She-Hulk series on Disney+. While a far cry from headlining her own feature show or film, getting Jessica Jones wrapped into this current Marvel world would be a welcome move for a character who has more stories in her for sure.
Jessica Jones, with Krysten Ritter in the lead role, lasted for three seasons on Netflix. It was part of their stable of Marvel shows that technically lived within the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, but were distinctly their own set of stories. They referenced the broader events of The Avengers saga without ever actually including those characters. The other shows in the group were Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Punisher culminating in The Defenders miniseries.
She-Hulk, meanwhile, is part of the Marvel Universe’s Phase Four and is set for a 2022 debut on Disney+. It will be a series about Bruce Banner’s niece Jessica Walters who’s played by Tatiana Maslany. The reason the timing on Krysten Ritter returning as Jessica Jones in this show would make sense has to do with the ownership rights of the character.
Netflix originally owned the rights to the characters listed above, but those contracts sunsetted when they stopped making the shows. According to the terms, Disney couldn’t start developing any of those shows or characters for two years after Netflix stopped making them. For Iron Fist and Daredevil, for instance, it’s now been the requisite amount of time and they can now join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in some fashion. Krysten Ritter and Jessica Jones aired their last episode on June 19, 2019.
With She-Hulk not airing for another couple of years, it would give the show the allotted amount of time to bring Krysten Ritter back into the fold as Jessica Jones. Again, this is only the beginning stages of a rumor, but the timing at least adds up with her making a return.
Things have been relatively quiet for Krysten Ritter since she finished up with Jessica Jones two summers ago. Besides reprising her role as Jane alongside Aaron Paul’s Jesse in the Breaking Bad quasi-sequel El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, there hasn’t been much on the actress’s plate. But this latest rumor follows word that Marvel was pursuing her to return as her most famous character. Here’s to hoping all of the Netflix characters are brought into the current Marvel world, finally tying together all of the storylines.
