This article is more than 2 years old
Kristen Wiig appears in the excellent Wonder Woman 1984 (read our 5-star review) as Dr. Barbara Minerva, an associate and friend of Diana Prince. She eventually becomes the villain known as Cheetah, a character that has often been portrayed as the archenemy of Wonder Woman. After the events of Wonder Woman 1984, we are left wondering if this is going to be the only appearance of Cheetah in the DC Extended Universe. Will the character return for Wonder Woman 3 and if so, how will she be affected by what happens to her in Wonder Woman 1984?
Obviously, this article will contain SPOILERS for Wonder Woman 1984 and the fate of Kristen Wiig’s character. So if you want to stay spoiler-free, don’t read past this next image.
In Wonder Woman 1984, Kristen Wiig’s Dr. Barbara Minerva uses a magical stone to grant her wish of becoming a powerful person. Over the course of the film, she gains enhanced strength and agility as well as popularity with others. By the end of the film, she has eventually transformed into a superpowered being with cheetah-like features. Naturally, this leads to a fistfight between her and Diana. At first, it seems like she might have been killed but she survives the encounter. However, the end of the film has her losing her abilities by renouncing her wish and reverting back into her natural human self.
This begs the question: what exactly happened to Kristen Wiig’s character once the film ended? We see that she is still alive but does not seem to have totally reconciled with Diana. Does this mean that she still resents the Amazonian? Or has she come to terms with Wonder Woman? It is a bit unclear exactly where she stands once the film is over, and it leaves the possibility open that she could come back for Wonder Woman 3.
However, without her powers, exactly how would Kristen Wiig’s character become Cheetah once again? Would she even continue on with that persona or would she find some sense of reconcilement with Diana? Or could she become a different villain? Considering what we know about Wonder Woman 3 – the story will likely take place in the present day – Barbara would be close to forty years older during the events of that upcoming story. What kind of relationship would Diana have with her over the years? Or have they even maintained any kind of relationship at all?
Hopefully, we can get a better sense of closure between Barbara and Diana in Wonder Woman 3. Kristen Wiig delivers a really great performance as the character, and it would be very rewarding to see if she has held a grudge against Wonder Woman for all these decades, or if the two have mended their relationship in some fashion. The door is absolutely open for her to appear in Wonder Woman 3, and it almost seems like that was intentional considering how her story ends in Wonder Woman 1984. If she does not return in Wonder Woman 3, it would be a bummer for fans of the actress and the character.
