Kristen Wiig appeared in arguably one of the biggest comedies ever made. What film is that? The 2011 mega-hit, Bridesmaids. The film saw Wiig team up with Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Melissa McCarthy in delivering one of the funniest comedies written. Paul Feig was the director behind this film, and the director and producer behind plenty of other comedies including The Office, Freaks and Geeks, Spy, and The Heat. He was recently on The Drew Barrymore Show, where he and Barrymore discussed the potential Bridesmaids 2 sequel. You can see the video below:
According to Feig, “People want a Bridesmaids 2, which would be fun, but think about it. The reason we love that movie so much is because Kristen Wiig’s character is going through the fire and repairing herself. Does she go through the fire again and repair again? Or do we just have a ‘crazy’ wedding?” He has a wonderful point that maybe a sequel to the film won’t go over well because Kristen Wiig was keeping everything together while going through her own personal issues, so that wouldn’t make sense to happen again. However, Annie could get married, and the bridesmaids would reunite for another hilarious adventure. This time, Lillian (Maya Rudolph) would have to be the maid of honor in what could potentially be another homerun film.
Bridesmaids currently holds a 90% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score of 76% is also very respectable. The film was lauded by many people, as the raunchy jokes landed well throughout the entire film. Kristen Wiig truly shined in the film, and it all but cemented her as the star that was not just known by her time on Saturday Night Live. Bridesmaids might have been the film that broke her away from the sketch comedy show completely. She also wrote the film which gave her even more credit as a comedic force. The film made a staggering $288 million in worldwide box office numbers against a $32 million budget, which basically made it a huge success. There is a huge reason why Paul Feig is constantly hounded about a potential sequel.
Paul Feig is currently busy with his next project, which is an adaptation of The School for Good and Evil. This adaptation stars Michelle Yeoh, Charlize Theron, and Laurence Fishburne. The sequel to Spy has also been announced, which is in the pre-production stages. Kristen Wiig, on the other hand, is set to star in a series for AppleTV+. This series is called Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, which also stars Laura Dern and Leslie Bibb. Both Wiig and Feig are busy with their own projects, so it is likely that Bridesmaids 2 is going to happen anytime soon.
Bridesmaids is currently streaming on Hulu, so everyone can go watch the film and see why Paul Feig is constantly hounded about the sequel questions. Kristen Wiig is fantastic in the film, as are the other ladies. The ensemble cast worked well with one another, and hopefully, they can all reunite sooner than later for the sequel. Paul Feig does have a good idea for the follow-up film, but it is likely just going to take time until he can meet with Wiig to discuss writing the script. Be patient folks, it could happen.
