Kristen Stewart On Her New Crime Thriller With A Comic Book Style
Kristen Stewart’s new movie, Love Lies Bleeding, is approaching its US release date, March 8, 2024, before it expands worldwide on March 15. The crime thriller is Kristen’s second highest-rated film, right after 2016’s Certain Women, with a 91-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Love Lies Bleeding premiered in the US as part of the Midnight section in 2024’s Sundance Film Festival on January 20, 2024, followed by an international premiere on February 18th at the Berlin International Film Festival. Kristen Stewart, the actress best known for her work in the Twilight movie series, stars as a reclusive gym manager, Lou, who falls hard for Jackie—portrayed by Katy O’Brian.
The site Black Girl Nerds scored an interview with Kristen Stewart and the team, providing insight into her character, who apparently finds some much-needed release in her misadventures with Jackie.
Kristen says, “I think she’s definitely like a shaken-up Coke can. Whether or not what is released is highly positive or good for the world, I don’t know, but there’s a lot of toxicity, violence, and misogyny, and bad stuff in there. Also, she’s a girl and she’s tender, and she wants someone to hold her, you know what I mean. So, it’s like… There’s that kind of friction and like internal push and pull.”
As seen in the Love Lies Bleeding trailer, Kristen Stewart’s character doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty but then seeks to find some distance between her and her criminal family after meeting Jackie. In fact, Stewart gained consistent praise, with many critics noting her standout performance in Love Lies Bleeding, with the cast’s talent shining through the gruesome bursts of violence and dead bodies.
Kristen added that the cultivation of Lou as a character was very exacting and exciting since certain elements of Lou’s character fit her naturally. Critics also praised the film’s visuals and powerfully pulpy effects that give off a comic-book vibe—by design. Love Lies Bleeding director Rose Glass added that the aesthetics and style of the upcoming movie were built upon the visual language established in her previous release, Saint Maud, with a very heightened and recognizable feel.
Rose Glass explains, “We definitely knew that it needed to feel kind of heightened and pulpy and sort of melodramatic. Even as far as like when we’re deciding the costumes and stuff, we wanted them as characters you can draw a sketch of, or you could imagine as cartoon characters.”
And while Love Lies Bleeding may be Stewart’s first collaboration with A24—which is also working on I Saw the TV Glow—director Rose Glass already has a film with A24 under her belt. We’re talking about the aforementioned Saint Maud from 2019, which follows a pious nurse who develops an obsession with saving her patient’s soul. The film was Glass’ directorial debut, and it laid some pretty solid groundwork for a flourishing career in psychological thrillers.
The director also showed a propensity for showing sensuality between characters of disparate backgrounds, and Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian’s Lou and Jackie reflect that. However, we hope that Love Lies Bleeding fares better among the audiences than Saint Maud did. The latter fared exceptionally well with the critics but failed to captivate the audiences, and we hope that Love Lies Bleeding won’t track the audience score set by the previous film, given its exceptional critical reception.
