Knives Out 3 Will Be A Star Wars Mystery?
On the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, director Rian Johnson joked about his next Knives Out sequel taking place in space.
Here’s a combination that we didn’t know we needed. Although he was almost definitely joking, Rian Johnson told the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that Knives Out 3 would be a “moon mystery” saying “Well, no, I gonna take the franchise to space, it’s time… No, it’s time, why not.” While fans were pretty divided on Johnson’s last foray into space, who could resist Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc interrogating some scum at the Mos Eisley Cantina?
While there’s almost no way that Knives Out 3 would ever be set in the Star Wars universe, we can always hope. The next entry into the franchise will definitely be set in a new location and with a brand new cast (excluding Craig), but space might be a little far out. Still, Johnson could certainly redeem himself with Star Wars fans if he was allowed to do a murder mystery set in the expansive universe.
Most people who disliked Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi took umbrage with how he handled some of the characters, specifically the beloved Luke Skywalker. Letting him do a Star Wars murder mystery story with original characters is an almost guaranteed path to box office dollars. Of course, whatever Knives Out 3 turns out to be is sure to be a hit whether Star Wars is involved or not.
Rian Johnson has confirmed that Knives Out 3 will be his next film and it’s little wonder that Netflix is wanting to capitalize on the IP. Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery managed to pull in over $13 million at the box office, despite having a shortened theatrical release window where it only ran for one week. Netflix is also likely expecting the film to do big streaming numbers when it becomes available for streaming this weekend.
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery features the return of Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc as he takes on a new case in Greece. The follow-up to the hit 2019 film features a new ensemble cast that includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. Many reviews are saying the sequel lives up to the lofty highs of its predecessor, so we’ll have to see if Johnson can pull off a hat-trick with Knives Out 3.
Netflix bought the rights to two Knives Out sequels back in March 2021, so Knives Out 3 was pretty much always a guarantee. However, we’ll likely have to wait and see how the two films perform on Netflix before we can get our hopes up for more from the franchise in the future. Based on how well the film already did with only one week at the box office, it’s hard to imagine that it won’t exceed streaming expectations as well.
The Knives Out franchise has a winning formula that could definitely be used over and over again and go well beyond Knives Out 3. With Daniel Craig’s eccentric performance at the center, a new mystery for each entry, and Johnson’s ability to draw in a star-studded cast of talent, there’s no reason the series couldn’t go on indefinitely. If you want to make sure Netflix continues to believe in the franchise, you can catch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix starting tomorrow.
