Knives Out was something of a surprise hit when it came out back in 2019. Though the cast was stacked, there hadn’t been overwhelming fanfare for the Rian Johnson flick heading into its released. But viewers were treated to something really special with this film, a whipsmart whodunit that oozed dark comedy in a mystery needing to be solved around the death of a rich patriarch. It worked on nearly every level, especially at the box office. And it wasn’t too long after that a Knives 2 was announced in a new franchise around the exploits of Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc.
Now, with Knives Out 2 in the works, many have been wondering how much it will tie to the original, or with this franchise are we mostly looking at a standalone story with Craig’s Blanc at the center and the mysteries changing around him. Considering Rian Johnson took his inspiration from the great Agatha Christie, we could have basically assumed the answer here. But the writer and director took to clarifying his thesis for the films and how he plans to move forward with the franchise. One of those things will be changing the titles, and it will start with Knives Out 2. We aren’t going to get the standard, numerical delineations here, but instead, titles will have more to do with the stories themselves. Check out what Rian Johnson had to say about it on Twitter.
So it looks like Knives Out 2 will actually be Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. From Johnson’s explanation, one can see that the inspiration from Christie is a big part of what drove him to begin making the titles a bit different from the original, keeping it in the same universe while giving this new one its own flavor, so to speak. What the Glass Onion has to do with this new story is anyone’s guess, though I’ll throw it out there that Benoit is peeling back something that we can also seem to see right through. How’s that for a stab at it?
This next movie will keep Daniel Craig around though besides him they will bring on a totally new cast to the mix. It’s as star-studded as the first time around with a whole host of names making their way into this story. There’s going to be Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson, Ethan Hawke, Kathryn Haan, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monae, Madelyn Cline, and Jessica Henwick among others. The plot of this story is very much under wraps though.
And Knives Out 2, or Glass Onion: A Knives out Mystery as we should get used to calling it, isn’t the end of the line for this franchise either. There will be at least one more movie with Netflix having purchased the rights to the next two movies after the first one came out. So they will be on the streamer over the next few years. There’s a lot to look forward to when it comes to the Knives Out franchise and it sure looks from Rian Johnson’s words that he wants to push this genre forward into the future.
