Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Reveals Epic Trailer Continuing Sci-Fi Saga
20th Century Studios has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The film, which continues the story of the most recent trilogy of Planet of the Apes films, is set to focus on Caesar’s son Cornelius, and kick off a trilogy all its own. According to the YouTube teaser trailer, the film is set for a Memorial Day premiere on May 24, 2024.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes seems to pick up several years after the events of the previous film, with Cornelius having grown into an adult ape. When we last saw Cornelius in 2017’s War for the Planet of the Apes, he was just a child, learning the ways of his revolutionary father, Andy Serkis‘ Caesar.
Taking over the lead from Andy Serkis, Owen Teague is set to star in both voice and motion capture for Cornelius, with additional cast members including Locke & Key‘s Kevin Durand, The Witcher‘s Freya Allan, and Shameless alumnus Peter Macon and William H. Macy.
Though Caesar perished in the final moments of the 2017 film, his legacy will no doubt hold a lasting bond, as he served as the leader of the ape freedom movement which allowed all of ape-kind to gain status as a sovereign group.
In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Cornelius must fight back against the rise of a tyrannical regime that threatens to bastardize Caesar’s teachings in order to propagate a ruling class of primates that enslave other apes. The film is set to be helmed by the filmmaker behind the Maze Runner trilogy, Wes Ball, with a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver.

Friedman is credited with writing the War of The Worlds screenplay, while Jaffa and Silver hold writing credits for Avatar: The Way of Water, ensuring the upcoming film will maintain a massive scale.

Despite Tim Burton’s critically panned 2001 stab at the franchise, the 2010’s Planet of the Apes trilogy managed to claw the IP back to cultural relevancy, with the trailer for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes appearing to bring us closer than ever to the 1968 original film’s timeline.

With any luck, the trilogy which Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set to kick off may even conclude with a decontextualized look at the iconic Statue of Liberty scene from the original 1968 film, which is still parodied and referenced in pop culture to this day.
At this time, there is still a host of speculation regarding the likelihood of a cameo from Andy Serkis in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Though Caesar has died and the franchise has progressed generations in its timeline, the motion capture actor could still appear in a flashback or dream sequence, leaving some fans to hold out hope. For now, we’ll have to just wait and see.
