Kingdom Hearts Movie in The Works
For the first time in the history of cinematography, video game movie adaptations are quite good and definitely worth a watch. Super Mario Bros Movie, The Last of Us, and Fallout adaptations are just a few among many that are now gaining more and more fans by the day, cementing the idea that the era of superheroes in Hollywood has passed—high-quality video game adaptations are the next decade’s hit. And now it’s turn for Sora, Donald, and Goofy to come to the big screen in a Kingdom Hearts movie adaptation.
Kingdom Hearts Since 2002
This is fantastic news for the fans of the gaming franchise. Kingdom Hearts has been gracing our consoles ever since 2002. And the franchise managed to garner a massive fandom, as well as several remasters and re-releases over the years.
Now, sources claim that the role-playing game originating on the legendary PlayStation 2 is getting a silver screen adaptation in the form of an animated Kingdom Hearts movie. Please note that we’re sharing insider information; as such, it should be treated as a rumor.
A Big-Screen Release
The information comes from Skyler Shuler, the founder of Disney-centric outlet The DisInsider, whose sources told the site that the project started as something Disney could launch on its Disney+ streaming service. But it soon evolved into a big-screen release.
This actually lines up nicely with previous reports regarding Kingdom Hearts movie adaptations, but DisInsider reports differ by stating that nothing has been greenlit as of yet.
In Very Early Development
So, it’s safe to assume that a Kingdom Hearts movie is still in a very early development stage, if it is even being made in the first place.
For those who haven’t encountered it, Kingdom Hearts is a very popular series of action role-playing games that were developed and published by Square Enix in collaboration with Disney Interactive.
Blends Disney And Square Enix
The games blend the worlds of Disney and Square Enix, featuring a mix of familiar Disney characters and settings, along with the original characters and game elements from the Final Fantasy gaming series.
For all intents and purposes, it’s a Disney × Final Fantasy crossover that spun a rather complex lore in more than 20 years on the market. But is it suitable for a Kingdom Hearts movie?
Maybe A Better Series Than Movie?
Well, that’s the thing; taking a massive world and lore that Square Enix and Disney have built together over the course of two decades and a few spare years might be better suited for a series rather than a 90-minute movie.
That is unless Disney plans to make Kingdom Hearts movie into something adjacent to the gaming franchise, a sort of “based on” release, which is a recipe for disaster—the fans don’t like when movie companies play with their favorite titles, and they won’t make an exception for Disney.
Where Would Kingdom Hearts Movie Best Land?
This is particularly true lately, especially after a slew of MCU movies that haven’t fared well among audiences. That’s due to Disney’s “milk the franchise” policies of producing the content at quantities at the expense of quality.
In fact, given how badly the gaming franchises have been treated by major streamers, such as Netflix with its The Witcher series, it’s perhaps best if Disney would hire Amazon to produce the Kingdom Hearts movie or series. The e-commerce company apparently does it better than established studios with nearly a century of experience.
