It has been almost a decade since Fox’s action-drama series, 24, starring the amazing Kiefer Sutherland aired its final episode after a long run of nine critically acclaimed seasons. For years, numerous discussions have taken place about creating a feature film starring the prime character, the badass counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer. Sadly, every ambitious plan commenced only to get stuck in their personal development hell and never moved forward. But as per a new report, there is once again hope that Jack will be back in our lives.
Deadline has reported that that Fox, the home of 24 from the beginning to its end in 2014, is currently engaged in “active creative discussions” to revive the iconic Kiefer Sutherland starrer drama series but with a new angle. Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn has revealed that despite all the failed discussions to bring back Jack, there is still a possibility that 24 can be renewed. His comments are similar to what 24’s executive producer Howard Gordon recently shared in a chat with Deadline, wherein he assured that debates about the show making a comeback with a new take is “always percolating” but also cautioned that the possibility is not official until “all the pieces come together.”
This would not be the first time that discussions are being held about bringing back Kiefer Sutherland as the famous Jack Bauer. The original series came to an end in 2010 with its eighth season which, according to Kiefer Sutherland, was the “high note” on which they wanted the series to conclude. At the time, the main agenda of Sutherland, Gordon, and the rest of the team was to present a fitting end to Jack Bauer’s story with a feature film version of 24. After the eighth season wrapped up, it was planned that shooting for the film will begin in late 2010 or early in 2011. In April 2010, Sutherland even confirmed that the script was finished and all that remained was him reading it.
By June 2010, the prior plans for the feature film were quietly scrapped and reports emerged that a crossover film, connecting 24 and the Die Hard franchise, was in the works. But again, these plans also never materialized. From 2010 to 2013, everyone from executive producer Gordon to Kiefer Sutherland keep assuring that work on the film is in progress, the script is almost ready, and how the filming is all set to begin soon.
Even though the idea of beginning the production of the film was next delayed indefinitely in favor of the show’s return in the form of a limited series of 12 episodes in 2014, Kiefer Sutherland maintained that the film is “in an ongoing situation.” After the successful debut and reception of the limited series or Season 9, titled 24: Live Another Day, temporary discussions for the long-debated feature film again took form. Last year, there were even reports that a prequel series about Jack’s origin story was being outlined but again, no further development was reported on that front.
Given the years that have gone by in the initiation and cancelations of all plans pertaining to the creation of the film, the last Kiefer Sutherland spoke about the topic, he expressed that he is clueless whether the movie will ever be made or if Jack Bauer will “end up finding his way into an episode one day and clarifying all of that, or ending all of that.” Hopefully, this time the discussions will reach a positive conclusion and we will finally know Jack’s fate after he turned himself over to the Russian agents in the explosive Season 9 finale seven years ago.
