Kevin Costner isn’t opposed to returning to Yellowstone, as he revealed in a recent interview on TODAY. The actor spoke about the show candidly saying, “I’ve supported that thing and I’ve loved it,” adding, “I would love to go back under the right circumstances I think that all of us want.” The key phrase there being “the right circumstances,” as there was quite a bit of back-and-forth when it came to Costner returning to film the final season of the show.

Kevin Costner’s Time In Yellowstone

Kevin Costner first appeared in Yellowstone as the family patriarch, John Dutton, in 2018 and proceeded to play the role for five seasons. The series is coming to an end later this year with the second half of Season 5, though it’s unclear if Costner’s John Dutton will make an appearance. Costner previously said he lived up to his side of the contract and that he didn’t shoot any episodes for the back half, so it seems unlikely his character will show up.

Costner Says He Always Prioritized Yellowstone Over Horizon

Originally, it was rumored that Kevin Costner was only willing to film one week for the second part of Yellowstone Season 5 and that he was preoccupied with his Horizon: An American Saga passion project.

But Costner later rebuffed that rumor saying that his contract got renegotiated from making seven seasons of the show to one two-part fifth season with the possibility of a sixth. He also said that Yellowstone was his first priority and that he was fitting his Horizon project “into the gaps,” adding, “they just kept moving their gaps.”

John Sutton Might Come Back

In any case, despite all of these filming rumors, it seems like Kevin Costner would still be willing to reprise his Yellowstone role in the future. Perhaps that means he’ll show up for filming for the second half of the fifth season or perhaps that means the show will bring him back for a guest role sometime in one of the many spin-off series.

Or, perhaps we’ve seen the last of John Dutton and his appearance in the first half of the fifth season is our final goodbye to the character.

Horizon

Kevin Costner has meanwhile moved on to another Western that should be quite different from his Yellowstone show. Costner directed, co-wrote, produced, and starred in his upcoming epic four-part film titled Horizon: An American Saga, which will see its first chapter hit theaters on June 28.

Costner received a standing ovation after screening the project at the Cannes Film Festival, though early critic reviews have been less than warm toward the film.

More Yellowstone On The Way

Although Kevin Costner is done with Yellowstone, he’s clearly not done with Westerns considering we’ll see Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2 later this summer. Whether or not his passion project is well-received or does well at the box office, the second part is already filmed and set to be released on August 16.

Whether the third and fourth chapter end up getting made will probably depend on how well these first two movies perform.

While you probably shouldn’t expect to see Kevin Costner in it, you can catch the second half of Yellowstone Season 5 later this year. If you want to see more of Costner in Western mode, you can catch Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1 in theaters on June 28 and Chapter 2 on August 16.

The first film stars Costner along with Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Giovanni Ribisi, Jena Malone, Abbey Lee, Michael Rooker, Danny Huston, Luke Wilson, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jeff Fahey, Will Patton, Tatanka Means, Owen Crow Shoe, Ella Hunt, Jamie Campbell Bower and Thomas Haden Church.
