Kevin Costner’s Western Is Now Filming, Yellowstone Season 5 Still Delayed

Tired of waiting for news about the second half of Yellowstone’s season 5, today’s update on Kevin Costner’s new western, Horizon, may upset some fans. Thanks to an Instagram post shared by Shelley Evans Palmer, followers can see that filming for the second part of the Western epic is now underway, seemingly delaying Yellowstone longer. The image, which you can see below, features a lineup of covered wagons near St. George, Utah, on the eastern side of the state, just a little over an hour from Zion National Park.
With towering red rocks in the background, it looks like the Open Range star picked the perfect spot for his latest project about the Old West. Taking place in the time after the Civil War when Americans were just beginning to travel and settle in the West, the story will be in the same vein as Yellowstone, yet set in a much different time. Signed on to join in Kevin Costner’s latest project is a star-studded cast that includes the likes of Sam Worthington, Jamie Campbell Bower, Kathleen Quinlan, Giovanni Ribisi, Glynn Turman, Luke Wilson, Jena Malone, and more.
As for Season 5 of Yellowstone, anyone who’s been following what’s to come of the next batch of episodes will know that scheduling difficulties have led to a production hold-up. With the first part coming to a close on New Year’s Day, it was unclear when audiences could expect the next slate of episodes to appear with the actors not entirely sure when filming would pick back up. Now, rumors surrounding Kevin Costner’s role as patriarch John Dutton have been pitting the actor against series creator Taylor Sheridan.
The drama all started because of scheduling conflicts that Kevin Costner was having with Yellowstone interfering with the production of Horizon. It would seem as though the Draft Day actor has had his fill of the Paramount series with reports coming out alleging that his role in the next part of Season 5 will be a lot smaller than we’ve seen in the past. While this is a major blow to the show and its loyal fandom, there are still plenty of other remarkable performances to pick up in Costner’s absence.
As for the Yellowstone universe, should this really be Kevin Costner’s last ride as John Dutton, it could also be the final season of the series. But, series creator Taylor Sheridan doesn’t seem to be sweating a thing as he’s still making loads of money from the IP with more prequels and spin-offs in the works. After an uber-successful first season run, the Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford-led 1923 was greenlit for a follow-up while other projects, including 1883: The Bass Reeves Story are heading into production.
Horizon will mark Kevin Costner’s return to his beloved old West storytelling as the star made his directorial debut in 1990’s critically celebrated drama, Dances with Wolves. With three sequels to Horizon already receiving the go-ahead from the studio, it’s clear that Costner has another hit on his hands. With Yellowstone fans still eager to see where Costner’s time on the series goes, at least they have another project to look forward to just over the horizon.
