Actor Thomas Haden Church recently reprised his role as the Sandman in Spiderman: No Way Home. The actor now joins Kevin Costner in the New Line and Warner Bros. western movie, Horizon. Church joins an all-star cast that includes Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Luke Wilson, and Stranger Things season 4 breakout star, Jamie Campbell Bower. Costner will act as director and producer for the project via his banner, Territory Pictures. The western is co-written by Jon Baird. As of this writing, Church’s character is yet to be revealed.
Kevin Costner’s directorial effort is described as an epic saga that chronicles a 15-year span of pre and post-Civil War expansion and settlement of the American west. This marks Costner’s return to directing after 2003’s Open Range. The film was a critical and box office hit that also was set in the western genre. Costner’s first foray into directing was the 1990 award-winning film Dances with Wolves. It won seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Horizon looks to capture the magic of Costner’s previous two films. According to the studio, the sprawling journey seeks to tell a western journey “Fraught with peril and intrigue from the constant onslaught of natural elements, to the interactions with the indigenous peoples who lived on the land, and the determination and at many times ruthlessness of those who sought to settle it.” Production for Horizon begins next week in Utah.
Kevin Costner is starring in another western epic on Paramount called Yellowstone. Costner plays the main character, John Dutton, who operates the Yellowstone Ranch. Since debuting in 2018, the series has received numerous award nominations and won Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing at the Cinema Audio Society Awards. The series is currently on Paramount’s streaming service, Peacock, and is set to premiere its fifth season in November. Taylor Sheridan, who directed films like Wind River and Those Who Wish Me Dead, began developing the series in 2013. Composer Bryan Tyler, who worked on many projects, including Iron Man 3, F9, and others, does a lot of the music for the series.
While many know Kevin Costner for his acting and directing, he’s also a country rock singer. He’s the singer for a band called Kevin Costner & Modern West, which began a worldwide tour in 2017 that included shows in Istanbul and Rome. Their most recent album, Tales from Yellowstone, was written from the perspective of his Yellowstone character, John Dutton. Songs from the album were included in season 3 of the Paramount show. The band’s 2008 album, Untold Truths got onto the Billboard Top Country Albums and the Top Heatseekers charts.
Kevin Costner also received a Screen Actors Guild nomination for his work on Yellowstone. As for his next directorial effort, there’s currently no word on when the project will be released as it just began pre-production. There’s also no word on whether the project will premiere in theaters and on streaming. Since the pandemic, many theatrical films have debuted on popular streaming services. The upcoming Halloween Ends, for instance, is set to debut both in theaters and on Peacock.
