Kevin Costner’s Best Character Is Getting A Spinoff Series
it's a surprising choice for a spin-off.
After getting a straight-to-series order from Peacock in August last year, Field of Dreams is ready to begin production in Iowa. But the studio won’t be using the field that Major League Baseball re-created on the site of the movie in 2021. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original film site has become a popular tourist attraction. It even boasts a few gift shops and parking lots to accommodate the large volume of visitors. It’s not all that surprising since the Kevin Costner-led sports drama is considered a classic among movie enthusiasts.
Created and written by Mike Schur, the limited series will re-imagine the blend of baseball, family, and magic that made the movie so enduring. Much like the 1989 Kevin Costner film, Field of Dreams will tell the story of Ray Kinsella, an Iowa farmer and devoted baseball fan that’s afraid of growing old without achieving anything. On a walk through his cornfield one evening, a voice tells him, “If you build it, he will come.” Taking the whispered words to heart, he decides to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield. Much to his surprise, the ghosts of baseball legends start to visit the field.
Field of Dreams was picked up due to a surge in popularity for the Kevin Costner film. Speaking about the series, President of NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Lisa Katz told Deadline that Field of Dreams has remained a fan favorite through the years. The movie has also managed to maintain its rightful position in the zeitgeist. She also said that its whimsical and grounded story is a space where Mike Schur excels. “We’re looking forward to bringing a new version of this classic to Peacock,” she told the publication.
As per The Hollywood Reporter, Mike Schur will executive produce the series through Fremulon, with Gordon for The Gordon Company, David Miner, and former The Good Place executive producer Morgan Sackett. Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, is the studio. According to President of Universal Television Erin Underhill, Schur’s talent and love for baseball make him the perfect choice for the project. He also has a deep reverence for the Kevin Costner film and its themes. So he will do a great job recreating the nostalgia and visceral emotion that made the movie such a massive hit.
The Field of Dreams series will be filmed at various locations throughout the state of Iowa, including Polk, Mahaska, Clinton, and Boone counties. Additional work will be done in Boston, Minneapolis, and Los Angeles. Production on the series is set to begin this summer. The studio will be locally sourcing crew members, suppliers, construction teams, catering, transportation, and set decoration. Sticking to Iowa for most of their requirements is a great move by the studios since the Kevin Costner movie is so closely tied to the state.
Meanwhile, Kevin Costner can be seen as John Dutton on Yellowstone. Created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson, the series focuses on the Dutton family who owns the largest ranch in the United States. The series was renewed for a fifth season in February and will air in two installments of seven episodes each.
