With his Golden Globe-winning turn as Dutton family patriarch, John Dutton on Yellowstone soon coming to an end, Kevin Costner has entered another race with his upcoming film series, Horizon: An American Saga. According to Deadline, the star says that he’s gone to great lengths to make sure the movie would be made, lengths that included taking a mortgage out on his 10-acre home in Santa Barbara, California to cover some of the film’s costs on his own.

Positioned right along the gorgeous coastline of California, the home is a prime spot of real estate that Kevin Costner says he took a mortgage out on “without a thought”. While his accountant pushed back with questions and concerns, the actor, filmmaker, and producer said that he has zero doubts about the story that he’s crafting. Understanding what’s at risk, Costner explained that at the end of the day he was “a storyteller” and knew that if he wanted his tales to be told, he’d need to put his money where his mouth is.

Kevin Costner’s work on Horizon isn’t just shaking up his living situation, but is actually one of the driving forces behind why Yellowstone will be calling it quits after the second half of its fifth season airs later this year. Audiences have long heard the rumblings that the Taylor Sheridan-created Paramount series was facing issues with Costner unwilling to move his schedule around after filming was delayed. Because of this, we were already expecting to see less of John Dutton in the latest season but now we know that the entire story will be coming to a close – kind of.

While Kevin Costner and the rest of the cast of Yellowstone may be riding away from the ranch, Taylor Sheridan has built himself an empire that will continue with a slew of other titles. At the tail end of 2021, audiences watched the Dutton family make moves for the West in 1883 and this year marked the arrival of another chapter in the family’s history in 1923 which was led by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. An immediate hit with fans, the show was quickly picked up for a second season.

There’s also the upcoming 1883 spin-off, 1883: The Bass Reeves Story, and a present-day offshoot titled 6666 about the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas. So, while those in love with the high-stakes familial drama on Yellowstone are sure to be sad to see Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, and the rest of the cast tip their hats goodbye, there are plenty more stories to come from the mind of Taylor Sheridan.

As for Kevin Costner’s Horizon, the man with an affinity for Western films such as his critically acclaimed directorial debut in Dances with Wolves is back at it with this Western epic. With filming is underway on the first of four films, we can expect to see Costner saddle up alongside a cast that so far includes Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Thomas Haden Church, Michael Rooker, Jena Malone, and Luke Wilson. At this time it isn’t completely clear how the sequels will follow on the first film’s timeline but when it comes to Costner’s dedication to the craft and the time period, we can only imagine that the series will be another knockout hit.
