According to actor and producer Kelsey Grammer, the upcoming Frasier reboot will address the absence of Martin Crane. The reboot has remained in limbo for quite some time and has recently just been given a series order by Paramount. For those unaware, actor Jonathan Mahoney played Martin Crane in the show, the father of Frasier Crane and Niles Crane.

While he was careful not to divulge any information regarding the planned reboot, Kelsey Grammer opened up about Mahoney’s loss and how the show will address it. Speaking with PIX11 News, the actor revealed that his character would reside in a different city. He also mentioned that the reboot would deal with Martin’s status.

“Of course, John [Mahoney] is gone, we’re gonna be dealing with that in the show.”

Mahoney tragically passed away in 2018 at the age of 77. The actor made his debut in the Kelsey Grammer-led series from the very beginning of the show. He remained on the series until its final episode in 2014.

Before he made his appearance in the series, Mahoney previously appeared in the Cheers episode “Do Not Forsake Me, O My Postman.” He played a character name Sy Flembeck, an inept jingle writer who had a brief conversation with Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier. NBC executives reportedly held the actor in high esteem.

Fans are excited that the Frasier rival is happening. Kelsey Grammer initially spilled the beans on the Frasier rival while promoting his brewery at a central New Jersey bar in 2021. He later confirmed during an interview with NJ.com that some ideas were being floated around regarding the reboot.

The Kelsey Grammer sitcom series comes after the rival of another 90s sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. 90s nostalgia is all the rage in Hollywood as studios look to tap into what made audiences glued to their television. Let’s not forget that Netflix has had tremendous success after purchasing the streaming rights of Friends.

Fans are hoping the Frasier revival can answer some lingering questions, such as the status of Martin Crane. We know the series will see Kelsey Grammer’s character in a new setting, and he’ll continue with his radio host gig. With a new location, there’s sure to be a new cast of characters that will interact with Frasier and hopefully lead him into some fantastic hijinks.

We also know David Hyde Pierce, Jane Leeves, and Peri Gilpin will all be making guest appearances in the show. The sad part is that they will not be reoccurring characters. As mentioned, the reboot looks to take Kelsey Grammer’s character into an entirely different world filled with new characters and problems he has to deal with.

Will that be okay for some? In the age of nostalgia and streaming services taking over the industry, perhaps it’s good that the Frasier reboot is taking chances. There are so many shows out there that it’s becoming quite impossible to stand out from the crowd unless you have a recognizable actor like Kelsey Grammer and an established IP like Frasier. The real question is whether the revival can spark people’s interest immediately.

We’ll have to see if the Kelsey Grammer reboot series can do that. As for now, it’s great to hear that Martin Crane’s status will be addressed and that the series is moving forward.
