As one of Hollywood’s most popular action heroes, Keanu Reeves joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems inevitable. While it hasn’t happened yet, the actor says Ghost Rider would be his dream role in the franchise. The John Wick star, who created his own graphic novel series called BRZRKR, made the revelation during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live when he was asked which superhero his 10-year-old self would love to play on the big screen.
There’s little doubt that comic book fans will be thrilled by Keanu Reeves’ love for the Marvel character. He has often been fan-cast as the first supernatural Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze – a stunt motorcyclist who agreed to give his soul to Satan to save his father’s life. This version of the character was brought to life by Nicholas Cage in 2007’s Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance in 2012.
While Keanu Reeves didn’t divulge any of the roles that Marvel has offered him in the past, he spent some time talking about his admiration for the films. “It’s really cool,” he told the audience. He added that the way Marvel movies have developed and what they are is really spectacular. The Speed alum also noted that it would be great to be a part of it.
Keanu Reeves has been pursued by Marvel Studios for a while, with Kevin Feige telling ComicBook that the franchise just needs to figure out the right way to include him in the MCU. But before he can ride off into the sunset as Johnny Blaze, the actor may have some completion from a few other high-profile stars. Norman Reedus and Ryan Gosling have both expressed their interest in the character in the last few years.
Whether or not Keanu Reeves decides to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is another comic character that he would love to play onscreen – that’s Berzerker. Interestingly, the Hollywood action star collaborated with graphic novelist Matt Kindt and illustrator Alessandro Vitti to create the superhero for a 12-issue comic book series called, BRZRKR.
“To be fair, I’m really right for the role!” Keanu Reeves said, after talking about his Marvel aspirations. “It’s almost like typecasting. I’m like, really right for it.” The series follows Berzerker, an immortal warrior who finds himself embroiled in countless battles through the centuries. But in the present day, he has to hide his identity as he takes on dangerous jobs for the U.S. government in exchange for the truth about his existence.
The idea for the comic series began when the actor met with BOOM! Studios in 2019. At the time, he was interested in creating original material that could one day end up being adapted into a series or movie. “I’d love to play Berzerker!” The Matrix alum told USA Today while promoting the concept. “It’s a really fun story so if it’s not me, hopefully, someone can play it.” So it’s no accident that Berzerker bears a striking resemblance to Keanu Reeves who created the story as a fan of Marvel comics.
