Keanu Reeves signed onto the first John Wick movie early in development, helping to develop the story and character alongside screenwriter Derek Kolstad. He brought on David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, two stunt performers and fight choreographers from The Matrix whose work he had admired, but had never directed a movie before. Fast forward eight years and the John Wick franchise is one of the biggest and most acclaimed action franchises in the world, which is pretty good for everyone involved. Even better for us, Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski just unveiled the first trailer for John Wick 4 at San Diego Comic-Con in all its gory glory. Check it out:

In just over a minute of footage, we see Keanu Reeves be as awesome as audiences could possibly want in John Wick 4. The first thing we see in the trailer is a traditional rope punching board (or Makiwara), soaked in blood, swiftly followed by a fist slamming into it. It is a pretty great image to start things off with, and it only gets better from there. Next, there are few seconds of Keanu Reeves, dressed all in black, walking through a stark white field of snow, surrounded by trees. Then Japanese martial arts cinema legend Hiroyuki Sanada (who also showed up recently in the trailer for David Leitch’s Bullet Train) gives a few words of warning to Keanu Reeves, who is preparing to go up against the full might of the High Table in John Wick 4

The trailer follows this up with the familiar faces of Lance Reddick as Continental Hotel concierge Charon and Ian McShane as the manager Winston. When we last saw McShane in John Wick 3, he was vowing eternal loyalty to the high table, so we will have to see whether he is friend or foe (or something in between) to Keanu Reeves in John Wick 4. Gorgeous shot after shot just keeps coming, with Keanu Reeves sitting down to a meeting with a nattily dressed Bill Skarsgård (who looks somehow even creepier when not in clown makeup) in front of a foggy Eiffel Tower and some John Woo-style flying pigeons. In addition to newcomers to the franchise Hiroyuki Sanada and Bill Skarsgård, the movie will feature Scott Adkins, Clancy Brown, and one of the world’s most highly regarded martial arts stars, Donnie Yen.

But don’t worry, it isn’t all painterly compositions in the trailer. We see an unidentified figure fling themselves in the air above a rooftop and shoot someone in the head with a bow from point-blank distance, and Keanu himself throw an ax into a guy’s head in a nightclub. Thrillingly, there is a few seconds of Keanu Reeves in close-up gun and katana combat with Donnie Yen, which is pretty promising for John Wick 4. And finally, as promised, you get to see Keanu Reeves really go to town on some opponent’s head with a pair of nunchucks. John Wick 4 is not scheduled to be released until March of 2023, but we already can’t wait.
