The grandiosely-titled John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum was released all the way back in 2019, and fans have been champing at the bit for more adventures of the reluctant yet remorseless killer ever since. Keanu Reeves was already announced to be starring in the upcoming John Wick 4, but as always, seeing is believing. Per Deadline, Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski were in attendance at the film industry event CinemaCon and offer a trailer. But for now, we at least have a glimpse of Keanu Reeves in John Wick 4. Check it out:

The picture shows Keanu Reeves in character for John Wick 4, surrounded by blurry candles and contrasting golden-red and green lights. It very much looks like Keanu Reeves is in front of some kind of altar for the events of John Wick 4. Given that the third installment of the series followed up earlier glimpses of the Slavic organized crime tradition of ritual tattoos with the more imagery of Russian Orthodox Christianity and folklore, it seems likely that the next movie will double down on that. Is Keanu Reeves praying for redemption in John Wick 4? Is he asking for permission? Is this just a place for him to chill out for a few minutes between battles against the High Table? We will have to wait for the next movie to see.

John Wick 4 is currently scheduled to be released in March of 2023, which feels like a long way off. But, on the other hand, when the first movie was released, probably no one would have guessed that it would lead to a whole slew of sequels, an increasingly complex mythology, and a spin-off film starring Ana de Armas. Before Keanu Reeves was cast in the first movie, the character of John Wick was actually supposed to be an elderly man (the script was written by Derek Kolstad with Paul Newman in mind). That the relatively young Keanu Reeves would be able to inspire an entire franchise is practically an action movie miracle, so we should just be thankful that John Wick 4 is happening at all.

Of course, Keanu Reeves has already been announced to star in a fifth movie after the events of John Wick 4. That means he will definitely be surviving the undoubtedly incredibly brutal and well-choreographed fights of the fourth movie, but fortunately, John Wick has never been the kind of series that relies solely on storytelling to be fun. When we last left Keanu Reeves, he had teamed up with frequent co-star Laurence Fishbourne’s Bowery King to take down the apparently all-powerful High Table, so likely this next movie will be about him assembling some kind of team in order to do so.

Will this team include Ana de Armas’ upcoming, unnamed Ballerina character or Halle Berry’s Sofia (plus her well-trained dogs?)? Will Ian McShane turn on the High Table and come to John Wick’s aid once more? Will there be a lot of really cool fights that go on way longer than expected? We can be sure that we will see one of those happen in John Wick 4.
